My Lo really seems to want to go forward but can’t work it out which leads to tears especially when she is crawling backwards and getting further away from the thing she wants is there anything I can to do teach her to go forward? 9m old

My DD we’ve backward first, I think it’s very common. Babies soon figure out forward after going backwards

MamaBearsss · 06/02/2024 18:10

Don’t stress. It’s normal.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 06/02/2024 18:14

Totally normal. Mine suddenly grasped it after a few weeks of backward and sideways crawling. Then she started walking at 10 months 😭

Completely normal! Leave her to it and she’ll work it out herself

BuffaloCauliflower · 06/02/2024 18:18

Really common for babies to do this. Just give them plenty of floor time to practice.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/02/2024 18:21

Totally normal. I used to hear bellows of rage and find my son had reversed under the sofa and got wedged, when he was trying to crawl forward to get something. I have so many pictures of his furious face when he was wedged under things Grin

Very normal. Doesn't usually last longer than a week or so before they work it out. You don't need to do anything to help, that's likely to just make them more frustrated

Mumoftwo1312 · 06/02/2024 19:00

My dd did this too and it only lasted a week or so.

She didn't get frustrated if I recall correctly, she just got bewildered which was very cute. Also around 10mo or so.

Then when she learnt to crawl she could do it so FAST lol we used to imagine entering her for some kind of toddler Olympics. She learnt to walk quite late as a result!

DD went backwards, they soon figure it out, it was really cute

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 06/02/2024 19:38

DS1 only ever crawled backwards. And then a few months later he walked.

NewName24 · 06/02/2024 20:10

Yes, very, very normal as everyone says.
If you think about the mechanics of it, it is more surprising that they do work out how to crawl forwards as quickly as they do.

11NigelTufnel · 06/02/2024 20:29

You don't teach them to crawl at all, they work it out by themselves. It's inly walking they observe us doing. Your baby will work it out soon enough. One of mine started off backwards crawling and the graduated to roll and sit before getting the hang of forward crawling.

Mumoftwo1312 · 06/02/2024 22:21

I looked back at some videos we took around that time and it reminded me I did do some things to encourage dd to crawl ...mostly for something to occupy me during mat leave... I used to put a toy mirror a few paces in front of her and she'd crawl to reach it. I also used to put her outside the playpen (the kind that's shaped like a cave) with fun toys inside so she'd crawl into it.

You don't have to do that stuff, they'll learn anyway, but it's kind of fun like training a pet haha

climbershell · 06/02/2024 22:39

Mine crawled backwards for 2 months, then suddenly one day she pulled up yo standing for the first time, and the nexr day crawled forwards. Two weeks later she was super fast at crawling

Lollibert · 07/02/2024 11:27

@climbershell glad to see this as others have said the backwards crawling only lasts a week or so my baby has been doing it over a month now but cries a lot because she gets so frustrated

Another thing I'd suggest is not wearing tights as they're slippery... things like corduroy dungarees etc might have more grip

Ready4ActionRyderSir · 07/02/2024 19:35

Normal.

Watch the Bluey episode 'Baby Race'. That was my daughter down to a tee.

Didn't crawl for ages, and when she did, she crawled backwards. And she bum shuffled everywhere. She finally walked at 17 months.

I don't think my daughter crawled backwards til 9 months and then forwards about a month later.

Nowt wrong with my daughter, she spoke early and is leaps and bounds ahead of her peers in terms of language. People often say the babies will be a talker or a walker and that does seem true to me. Her cousin who was younger yet insanely mobile for her age spoke much later on.

Quite honestly, I remember it all feeling like the biggest deal in the world at the time because my friends with same aged babies were hitting milestones and mine weren't. It felt stressful and all consuming for a bit. But years down the line I realise kids hit milestones in their own times, it's true, no two are the same.

Child 1 - cute potato for 10 months then rolled, crawled (backwards) and babbled over the course of 3 days. Backward crawling lasted a couple of months at least. Walked unassisted at 20 months.

Child 2 can’t crawl, she’s 7 months old and has given up on crawling in favour of rolling everywhere like a little tumbleweed. I expect she will walk much earlier than her big brother.

They figure it out and do their own thing in the meantime x
