How soon after birth did you go out into the world and mingle?

There are tons of clubs and cafes for new mums in my area (some involving train) but I wonder how soon is reasonable to venture out (other than for walk)? Is it safe prior to vaccines?

Fastest 'trip' out with dc3 was to pick dc1 and dc2 up from school.. Womb until 6am. Pram at 3pm.

wonderstuff · 04/02/2024 20:53

I was out after about 36 hours with dc2, very easy birth. Took about a week with dc1 I think.

NewYearSameShizzle · 04/02/2024 20:55

We were on the school run later in the day, a veeeerrrrryyy slow walk from the car. We also popped out for breakfast with friends a couple of days later.
Just do what you feel up to, but there is generally no need to wait for vaccines before venturing out.

A couple of weeks with DC1 but he was hard work first a long time. Pleased to say he got a lot easier Wink

About 3 days with DC2.

TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyHusband · 04/02/2024 20:57

Straight from the hospital to Tesco's dd1 and 6 days dd2 but dd2 was an emergency c section.

Snugglemonkey · 04/02/2024 20:59

I had a section at 4pm, released 5pm next day. Went for afternoon tea with family the day after.

Wawaweewah · 04/02/2024 21:00

About a week or two for things like a walk/short drive to see grandparents/the shops but I didn't venture out to baby groups until DC1 was 6 weeks. DC2 is due soon and I'll need to be out and about much faster this time because my toddler won't tolerate being cooped up.

ditalini · 04/02/2024 21:00

Yep, second child out on the school run pretty quickly (school hols when born so we had a week's grace!).

With dc1, dh got 2 weeks leave and we were out meeting people for lunch etc after a few days because it allowed for a swift exit if things were going on a bit too long.

Ds2 is 10 though and I think there was generally a lot less stuff about newborns and germs such as rsv.

ZiggyZowie · 04/02/2024 21:01

With each of my 5 children I waited a month before I left the house.

I liked being in a sort of cocoon situation

PermanentTemporary · 04/02/2024 21:02

About 2 weeks. I was too keen to get out and about I think but I can't really regret it.

arethereanyleftatall · 04/02/2024 21:05

Just straight away. We went out for lunch when dd was 1 day old.

TheFormidableMrsC · 04/02/2024 21:10

I was back doing the school run the day after I gave birth. I think it depends on what help you have and obviously how well you feel.

BlackBean2023 · 04/02/2024 21:10

DD1- a few days, maybe 5?

DD2 - couple of days

How? Especially with 2/3/4 other children!?

arethereanyleftatall · 04/02/2024 21:15

Just think op - any single parent who has an older child and no help, has to be up and out straight away. No choice.

WarningOfGails · 04/02/2024 21:15

There’s no reason to stay at home from the baby’s point of view, it’s just about how quickly you feel up to it!

I remember going to a restaurant with DC1 at 7 days old. And a wedding at 3 weeks old! Can’t remember anything specific with DC2 or DC3 but obviously was on the school run at 2 weeks when DH went back to work.

Windymcwindyson · 04/02/2024 21:15

When I had 4 dc chicken pox held us hostage for 1 month... I crawled the walls. That first day out we sat under a load of trees eating fish mad chips in the big park in an absolute rain storm. It was sheer bliss!!

Windymcwindyson · 04/02/2024 21:16

*fish and chips. It was me that was mad... Just about!!

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 04/02/2024 21:18

Dd1 a couple of days, similar with dd2. I went to a sporting club and everyone was surprised to see me.

My husband would take older ones to school and home again.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 04/02/2024 21:21

If you're breastfeeding the baby will be receiving antibodies from your milk. I wouldn't worry to much about strangers giving germs unless they the type to put their face into babies pram.

unicornpower · 04/02/2024 21:24

DD1 about a week I think but DD2 was the following day after birth

Multipleexclamationmarks · 04/02/2024 21:24

A couple of days with dd1, went on holiday with her at 2 weeks.
Dd2 came to our wedding at 3 weeks old.
Ds was at toddler group with dd2 at a week old. Don't remember vaccines ever crossing my mind except for swimming, didn't take any of them swimming till they'd had their first lot.

Paperandpen123 · 04/02/2024 21:25

DC1 weeks, that was more about my recovery and just getting to grips with it all

DC2 swim lessons 3 days after birth and out at cafes / kids centres etc however much easier birth and i felt fine.

Each time it was nothing to do with the kids and more about me / how I felt

DrJump · 04/02/2024 21:25

Within days for all of them. DD was a bit slower as we had to stay in hospital for a few days.
