2 year Ages & Stages Questionnaire

DS is 2 in 1 week. He has scored the following in the asq 24 month questionnaire.

Communication: Grey
Gross motor: Black
Fine motor: White
Problem solving: Grey
Personal Social: Black

I'm not overly surprised as he didn't 'pass' his 1 yr check first time. Also not panicking either as he's only just approaching 2 and has already been referred for speech and language therapy.

We haven't had an appointment for our 2 year check yet I've just done the asq from online.

Should I be doing something more to help him? Or are the questions on these things just way off. Don't want to just sit here waiting for 2 year check just to be told he hasn't 'passed'. Maybe he just needs more time ☺️

What do the colours mean?

It's the grading given when you look at the results.

I think they do it more towards 27 months (and in our area it was well towards 2.5 before we got an appointment) so I wouldn't worry too much as a few months can bring lots of developmental changes.

Posted before I meant to... my little one also didn't meet milestones for the 1 yr check as she wasn't walking and barely standing. A couple of months later she was running all over the place. At 2 years old she was barely talking and seemed far off the speech milestones. A few months later it all came at once and now she's rattling off full sentences. She just takes her time getting ready to do something. Not all kids fit the timelines for the questionnaires and it doesn't have any particular meaning. Obv they can be a way of picking up early on where more support may be needed, but for every one where that's the case I reckon there's a whole host of kids who just dance to the beat of their own drum and do things to their own schedule :)

In general, I think the ASQs are thought to give a fairly accurate snapshot (despite the occasional weird question), but it's quite common to get one or two grey areas (that's part of how they've been designed, actually). It is also only a snapshot, and baby and toddler development has such spurts in it that a child can be 'in the black' one week and 'in the white' a couple weeks later. How does he score on the 22 month one?

If he's also got some grey/black scores on the 22 month one, I'd probably want him seen. Who referred you for speech and language therapy? Can you chat to them about it?

If that wouldn't be suitable, I'd get in touch with your health visitor and ask when his review is due/ask to have it scheduled now due to these concerns. Even if you're in an area that does a 27 month review (mine does, using the 27 month ASQ), saying you've got multiple black and grey areas on the ASQ usually help persuade professionals that they ought to take a look.
