Is this a severe lip tie ? Worried mum

13 month old and feel really bad as I’ve never noticed. He’s breastfed and has never had any feeding issues but I was showing my friend his molars coming through and she said looks like he’s got a severe lip tie ? She said her son had one and had it snipped but his ‘ flap’ was just above the gum so could be snipped. But she says as my DS is to the bottom of the gum he will need surgery when he’s older and braces? Got me all worried and feeling bad I never noticed anything wrong. He’s got 10 teeth and I’m always looking in his mouth and not once though that didn’t look right

My son has a lip tie similar to this. I was told by the health visitor that it can be corrected through surgery when he's older and he may need braces. I did some research on it and in the UK they won't cut lip ties because they're not as straightforward as tongue ties and they don't tend to cause problems. The only real problem they might cause is cosmetic (a gap between the front teeth). Don't worry about it as it may correct itself and the lip tie can apparently break when the adult front teeth come through

My sons looked exactly like this and it broke of its own accord once his baby teeth fell out. You'd never even know now.

Most tongue/lip ties improve or go away completely on their own. Cutting all ‘ties’ on tiny babies is really trendy right now but not at all necessary unless they’re causing feeding issues etc. If he’s completely fine I really wouldn’t worry :-)

@Charlotteap I asked our dentist about my son as his looked exactly the same as yours and I was concerned - he said it’s not something that they would “treat” unless it was causing issues and the majority actually broke on their own without the child even noticing. This definitely happened with ours - I just noticed his teeth moving quite significantly!

Pic with the gap is my child at 18months. Second pic is him now at 3!

@Charlotteap Definitely mention it to the dentist - even just to get reassurance from a professional 😊 I was worried too as I’d read all kinds of things about issues with teeth and with speech etc but DS has had none at all 😊
Its actually funny how much I missed his wee gap when it disappeared though 😅
