Seven teeth at 20months

My DS is nearly 20 months and has only 7 teeth. Every tooth has been a struggle so far - days of crying and refusing to eat when they come through.

I'm just a bit worried that he's getting his teeth really slowly compared to other toddlers I know.

If your little one had only a few teeth at 18M when did they have the full set? What was teething like for molars/canines?

Has he seen a dentist?

Mine is 21 months and only just got molars popping through, and the tips of a couple of canines. Seems to be on the later side but was bang average on timing of the first few teeth. There was a very long period of nothing after the first 8. The symptoms haven't been that bad in comparison, so that was unexpected. His friends who were early/average went through hellish times but he's taken it like a trooper! He likes to hold food and spit in his mouth for ages when teething as it must feel soothing, it's a bit annoying for me but much better than him crying in pain. Maybe being a tad older is a slight advantage in that way

Thanks for this @chillichutneysarnie and @eggbot for the reminder about a dentist!

He's not formally seen a dentist, but that might be a good idea for some reassurance. And just to get him used to going!

Good to hear that teething wasn't so bad for you with the later teeth @chillichutneysarnie - hope it goes the same way with my little one.

Can’t remember anything about molars which suggests it wasn’t terrible. My second at one just barely had the first tooth and didn’t have molars before 2 iirc. I remember speaking to the dentist about it who said they don’t tend to worry unless they get to 18months with no teeth at all so your wee one is okay!
there is a theory that getting & Losing baby teeth later is better for the adult teeth. Try not to worry & try not to compare, but definitely time to see the dentist!

My DD was a slow teether, didn’t get her first tooth until just after she turned 1. First molars came in after she turned 2, canines shortly after and they were horrific. 2nd molars didn’t come in until just after she turned 3.

@ForeverTired89 Oof, that sounds tough! This is my fear about the canines and molars - slow and painful!

That said, worrying about it isn't going to make any difference, so I'll try to just deal with it when the teeth show up.

DS has a dentist appointment in a few weeks, do they should be able to check it's all fine then.

Two things I found better for teething was anbesol rather than any gels which just slide off and if you need to give something I found ibuprofen helped better than paracetamol (calpol) but usually just have it at night to help them get a sleep.
