Hi, please help!
1 yesr old developed small dry spots end of November that we moisturised. However they've grown to red round shaped rashes, raised in middle, and spread from arms to under chin and chest also

Have done 2 courses of canesten for 10 days. NO RESULTS
have done one course of hydrocortisone for 7 days NO RESULTS
tried cetraban in between NO RESULT

been waiting 3 weeks now for outcome of dermatologist. Am at wits end. Please please help

They dont seem to be itchy, my son doesn't scratch them, but they must be uncomfortable.

Been round the houses- gp, pharmacist, walk in clinic. Please, anyone have experience with this?

I take it the canesten was for potential ringworm?

Because that what it looks like to me...

It's really contagious so you really need to be washing hands after touching each spot otherwise you're transferring the fungus over and over.

We used a generic anti fungal from boots (showed the pharmacist the rash) and it took about 2 weeks I think, to clear.

Just quickly googled and the Canesten website says to use 2-3 times per day for 2-4 weeks for a fungal infection.

If it's ringworm, I'd try and keep DC in long sleeve tops to cover the rash and stop them touching and spreading the rash, wash all clothes, towels on a hot wash and use only once and regularly wash bedding. This should lower levels of the fungus which should help the cream clear it up.

Yeah I was going to say it looks like ringworm to me too. Do you have pets/close contact with animals? As they can spread/reinfect.

Antifungals are a pain as you have to use them a lot for a long time to clear it, and make sure sheets/towels are kept clean.

Looks like any fungal rash I've ever seen too. 10 days isn't very long and perhaps you need Daktarin instead?

RainbowZebraWarrior · 04/02/2024 10:31

That is absolutely ringworm. I've had it before, and it was identical.

I had anti fungal cream, but ended up having to get a steroid cream from the GP to clear it completely.

Yes got canesten from boots pharmacy (without anyone looking but based on our description )

Perhaps we are spreading it on application, good point

Only thing is, neither my husband or I have it. If its super contagious wouldn't we have it by now?? Its been a good two-three months since we first noticed it

Thanks for all your help!

I've googled and found discoud eczema that looks very similar. My thought about this was maybe its DE and we've been misdiagnosed, only because neither my partner or I have it, and canesten doesn't seem to be doing much or hydrocortisone

I would say the redness def ebbs and flows during day. Sometimes looks v angry, other times more dry

Hey, just an update on this and to help others who might have the same

We went private (nhs dermatologist was a 2 month wait list and just couldn't face it getting any worse)

It is eczema with a staph infection due to lack of care/treatment, not at our hands but by the misdiagnosis and wrong medication being applied

Have been given a comprehensive course of treatment including a stronger fucid acid cream, eumovate and elidel, plus lots of QV cream and ointment to keep skin moisturised

Derm said it always gets miss diagnosed as ringworm as it looks so similar, but the fact canesten was doing nothing along with the other ailments, she confirmed it was eczema

Hope this might help other ppl at a loss x
