Newborn doesn’t sleep

Longest stretch she’s done is 3.5 hours once in 2 weeks, I know newborns don’t sleep much but she does an hour/1.5 hours at night

Of a day does not sleep. Maybe the odd nap but wakes very quickly and seems to feed so much (ebf)

can this be normal?? I feel like she only gets the odd time during the night but those stretches are like 1.5 hours max

blackpanth · 03/02/2024 20:07

She's cluster feeding which is totally normal too x

blackpanth · 03/02/2024 20:07

Yes normal
if you’re breastfeeding, try to feed laying down / co sleep

BitOutOfPractice · 03/02/2024 20:08

Yes, sorry, that’s normal. It will get better though. It’s a form of torture but I promise you it will pass.

congratulations on your new baby.

Thanks everyone I am exhausted so unsure if this is making me an anxious wreck but I started panicking like is something wrong with my milk? Is she poorly? But she has lots of wet and dirty nappy’s, great colour, is very alert (and nosey hehe!)

my DS was formula fed so did do stretches of sleep and of course didn’t have cluster feeding so I have nothing to compare this too

and my mum as much as I love her keeps bringing up thhat she musnt be full and must need a bottle to sleep , I get its from a place of love but I did start to wonder if my milk isn’t filling her enough??

Is she gaining weight as expected? If not, I'd consider a feeding issue such as a tongue tie or bad latch.

A sleeping pattern like this could be normal but it could point towards an inefficient feeder

Is she's producing plenty of wet and dirty nappies it's fine. My daughter who's breastfed at 3 weeks did 6 hour stretch of sleep. Breastfed babies feed more but will become less when milk is established

blackpanth · 03/02/2024 20:17

If*

Rhino94 · 03/02/2024 20:17

Totally normal with feeding, she is building up your supply, giving formula would be counter productive. Like you say she is have lots of wet and dirty nappies which is a sure way of know she’s getting enough from you. Again with the sleep, totally normal although exhausting!

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 03/02/2024 20:27

Just keep an eye on nappies. My baby suddenly for a week straight woke at least every hour to be fed, same in day. Very fussy. But he gained so much weight in that week! My milk was fine, he was just having a growth spurt. If you want to give a bottle that's your choice, your mental health is important. But don't feel pressured. If you are getting really tired and anxious, if you expressed some milk into a bottle perhaps your partner could take baby and you could get a longer stretch of sleep? Sleep deprivation is hell and is a huge factor in low mood and anxiety.

Petrie99 · 03/02/2024 20:43

It is normal. Yes, a bottle would probably fill her up for longer as formula takes longer to digest. That doesn't mean there is anything wrong with your milk, breastfed babies tend to feed more frequently and therefore also wake more during the early days until feeds become more spaced out. Its hard, but there is likely nothing abnormal about it. There are those that don't follow that pattern though. Also for the daytime naps, a lactation consultant told me that any time they were feeding with their eyes closed counts as a nap, do they do this during the day? Baby will become more efficient and feeds will space out, stretches will get longer. Hang in there x

She's not giving them formula. And doesn't need to. She cab express. And formula doesn't always give long stretches. As well as breastfed babies can do longer stretches too

Tinylittlebabies · 03/02/2024 22:14

Totally sucks, but totally normal! My EBF 1st baby was able to sleep 6-8 hours a night by 4 months… my EBF 2nd baby has almost never slept that long in one stretch in as many years 🙄 Just keep doing what you’re doing xx

Petrie99 · 04/02/2024 20:49

@blackpanth Of course, that was my point. Formula may give longer stretches (for us it actually didn't when we eventually tried it) but even if it did, that doesn't mean that her milk isn't filling baby up enough. A lot of people stop breastfeeding because they think their baby is too hungry, I was trying to explain that that isn't often the case, it's just a normal feeding pattern.

strawberryswizzler · 04/02/2024 20:50

totally normal. with ebf it’ll be cluster feeding. it’s exhausting but normal
