16 month old not moving after vaccinations

16 month old DS had his 12 month vaccinations yesterday at 9am. 4 needles. He was thrashing about while the nurse was injecting him and I was trying to pin him down, but on the fourth needle her hand slipped and it’s scratched him down his thigh. She said it was just a surface wound, which it looked like, and put a dressing over it. See photo of scratch, doesn’t look too bad. We’ve had a very rough night with him, he’s got a temperature which comes down with calpol, very lethargic and he’s napped most of the morning. Still drinking plenty but not eating much. Both of my children have responded this way when they’ve had their 12 month vaccines. But my concern is that he can’t move from the pain in his legs from where he had the injections, particularly the left one which was scratched. He can only just sit up but isn’t crawling, can’t walk, can’t even stand up. Goes rigid from the pain when we pick him up. He’s just spending the entire time in our arms. I rang 111 last night because I was concerned, a clinician phoned me back and they told me to just monitor it, he’s probably in a lot of pain from the injections and got a dead leg, and to try ice packs. But it’s not getting better at all. Would you wait it out or phone them back?

That's some scratch! Personally I'd take him to a and e for assessment if he is in so much pain. Hope he feels better soon.

Ouch! Looks painful. I imagine his legs at very sore. My boys wouldn't move around the day after theirs, we sat and did duplo for as long as they could be convinced and then watched TV. I imagine your DS is veryuncomfortable. Is he eating and drinking?

Has he had Calpol this morning?

I'd ring and ask for advice. It does take more than a day for a scratch like that to heal and feel normal though.

Just as an anecdote, a similar thing happened to my DC when they were little. Horrendous scratch, even 3 years later the nurse remembered it as it's traumatic for them too! DC is now 16, no issues, not even a scar.

Wait it out. It’s a nasty scratch but it’s not infected : keep it clean and dab some savlon or similar on it. I’d definitely call in 24 hrs though if no improvement.

My mum got a dead arm from her flu jab this year. She couldn't move her arm for about 24h by 72h she was back to normal functioning.
She felt herself tense as that needle went in and it felt "different" to the other two vaccines she had at the same time. The GP she saw this was probably at the root of the dead arm. It sounds like maybe something similar happened to your little fella. Hopefully he too is back to normal within a day or two. Do reach out as much as you need to medical advice

Thanks for the advice. Hes still not fully mobile but a lot better today. I think he was just in so much pain with his legs! @Superscientist that makes sense because the nurse kept saying to me “he keeps tensing his leg and he needs to relax it” but obviously there wasn’t much I could do about that!
