What age did you stop usi g a highchair?

DS is 22 months and has the Ikea highchair at home & at nursery, with added foot support. He still physically fits in it but yesterday and this morning he screamed at breakfast time and wouldn't go in it to eat his breakfast. Ended up sat on my lap eating his whilst I tried to eat mine. The other day at nursery they said he got really upset before lunch and wouldn't eat it so went down for his nap and ate it when he woke up - I suspect it might have been a similar thing. He ate his dinner in the highchair fine last night so it's not a constant issue.
DH is out now collecting a booster seat from Argos for us to try out this weekend to see if that helps.
He prefers to eat his snacks sat on his toddler chair in the living room or standing at his little table but I want his meals to still be eaten sat in a chair at the family table so we can all eat together. He's too short to climb onto our dining chair by himself so will still need a hand getting up and obviously can't reach the table when he is sat on tjem, hence trying a booster seat.
What age did your child refuse their highchair and was it a total switch for all meals or did you still use the highchair on occasions?

We have a Tripp trapp highchair. We took the baby bar and strap part off to convert to a toddler chair ie same height but can climb up and down himself around 18 months as he could climb out and scream.

He still uses daily and uses at kitchen side to bake and food prep

Also, in case it helps, at Ds nursery they take children from 18/20 months onwards. They have no high chairs at all and all children if staying for lunch and for snacks sit at low tables with low normal chairs

We still use the highchair at 2.3 months at home. At nursery they all have little chairs and tables and although we also have this at home, I find my toddler can't concentrate on a meal for long enough if he isn't in the highchair to stop him getting up and walking about.

I think my 4 year old would still sit in her IKEA highchair if she could... She's so easy going and laid back she's practically horizontal. We had to take her out of it at 3 (she's small) so that her baby brother could start using it to wean.

Said baby brother however has an independent streak a mile wide. He started refusing the highchair at around 20 months, and we finally gave up on it at 21 months. The booster cushion we got to replace it lasted only a week before he rejected that too. Fortunately he's significantly bigger than his sister was at the same age, so he's fine sitting at the table without it.

Ok, so it sounds like he's around the age a lot of toddlers stop being happy going in a highchair.
We took off the highchair tray for lunch today and told him he had a new chair and he was happy going in it to eat pulled up to the table. I'll unbox the booster seat tonight when he's asleep and set it up for breakfast and see how he goes.

He's still in the baby room at nursery where they have meals in highchairs but snacks sat on little chairs or on the floor. When he goes up into the next age room they don't use highchairs so I'll warn nursery on Monday that they might need to try offering him meals sat at the little chair and see if there's a table he can use.

My ds still uses his Tripp Trapp when he comes home and he's 23🤣

We switched to Ikea urban junior chairs at about the same age. There was about a 2 or 3 month crossover where they used our portable fold up booster on a normal seat until we were sure the buckle was not needed. Then they went straight to the Urban and to this day the 11yr old still chooses to use it.

We've just taken DD2 out and she's 21 months. She just sits on a normal chair, with a couple of extra cushions (the kind of flat sturdy cushions that Velcro to the wooden part of the chair, so she's not sitting on a precarious tower of cushions).

My ds still uses his Tripp Trapp when he comes home and he's 23🤣

I'm reading MN in ours now... and I'm double that!

My 7yo will still ask for one when she can't reach. She is petite and unusual lol.
We got a cheap version of a tripp trapp, but should have got the real thing. Cheap one wasn't as adjustable

Granddaughter stopped highchair aged 3 at home but when she comes to us she makes a beeline for the highchair. Today we went out for lunch and she chose to sit in highchair. She is now 4 but very petite and highchair makes it easier for her to sit at table level.

AegonT · 03/02/2024 22:49

When DD1 turned 4 we switch to that tall chair thing pictured above. Normal chair from 8. DD2 is almost 3 and still in the Antilop.

weetee0102 · 04/02/2024 20:15

About 20 months she just wanted to sit on a chair and we have sort of bucket chairs so covered at both sides, was a bit of a nightmare eating out at first but she's nearly 2.5 now and sits in most chairs no bother, glad to be rid of the high chair. I think the face we got her a wee table and chair set for the living room at 18 months kind of made her want to ditch the high chair.

SErunner · 04/02/2024 22:16

We gave up around the same age. Had some brief success with a booster seat then that was rejected too. She's been sitting on a normal chair since before she was 2 but weirdly has just this month gone back to the booster seat (2.5). We took the path of least resistance, a screaming child in a highchair is not a battle I wanted to have. We have though always insisted she has to sit or kneel on the chair and only eats at the table. Also once she's got down there is a clear instruction to get back up if she wants more food or that is mealtime finished. We've had a few meltdowns at times with these rules but not many and she's pretty good both at home and when out (most of the time)!

SErunner · 04/02/2024 22:19

That said, she still sits in her high chair at grandmas. Grandma likes rules and doesn't take any shit 😂

pelican123 · 04/02/2024 22:20

Both kids started refusing around the same age - between 18 and 24 months.

CreativeNameChange · 08/02/2024 22:51

We got rid of the highchair a few months ago, just after DS turned 2, as he was really protesting about being strapped in.

We first tried a booster cushion on one of our normal dining chairs, but he didn't seem that comfortable and kept wriggling and getting off the chair during his meals, so we got the same IKEA junior chair that someone has linked to above. It has worked really well so far.
