Is this chicken pox??? (With pic)

Baby is almost 9 months and spots appeared last night. Mostly on back, tummy, and neck. Some are red and others are fluid/blister like. Cold / cough symptoms about a week ago but getting better. No temperature and mostly in a good mood. I thought chicken pox was more widespread than this? My eldest is part vaccinated (due for 2nd dose) and I’m worried she’ll spread it at preschool.

It does look like it but they usually multiply quicker than you describe. Could just be a mild dose though maybe?

Charlieradioalphapapa · 01/02/2024 17:14

It does look like it I agree. Is it itchy?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/02/2024 17:16

Could be. CP usually starts on the torso.
DS had a few spots for 5 days before they started to multiply. Then it was really fast!

Thanks for replying @MrsWhites @Charlieradioalphapapa

Hard to tell if it’s itchy (baby’s not the most coordinated / trying to scratch) but doesn’t seem distressed

CP spots have clear blisters -use a torch to double check they're clear. The odd one may not be, but the vast majority should be if CP.

MissterMummy · 01/02/2024 17:19

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads hmm yes it started on the belly .. oh dear maybe it just hasn’t fully gotten going yet

Spots can come up over a few days or they can just have a mild dose

Moier · 01/02/2024 17:22

My eldest was covered when she had them.. not poorly at all.. my youngest had five spots on her chest. .. very poorly.. Both confirmed chicken pox..
I am 99% certain your photo shows chicken pox.

DaughterNo2 · 01/02/2024 17:31

I think so. My son had a mild dose, yet my daughter was smothered in them 2 weeks later

Charlieradioalphapapa · 01/02/2024 17:50

If the spots started yesterday and there’s this many today, I’d sat 99% chance is chickenpox. My DCs started with one spot on the stomach and then they got others in batches of about 5 or 6 over the next few days. Had cold symptoms and a temp but not particularly unwell. Just miserable because of the itching . If there’s no attempt to get to the spots to scratch at any spots that I think might be a sign it’s something else as usually the main thing with pox is the itchiness. I’ve known kids with literally a couple of spots and others that had hundreds. It can be really mild.

CoalCraft · 01/02/2024 17:55

Yup, that's chicken pox. In my youngest it was just on her torso too, really - nothing much on her limbs at all and just a few on her face.

MissterMummy · 01/02/2024 17:57

Ah thanks everyone for the advice, looking like we’ll have to hunker down and quarantine ourselves for a week. Does chickenpox at this age (9 months) warrant a GP visit? Or only if it gets more severe?

Yes it looks exactly like chickenpox and it's totally normal for the spots to appear in waves so many think it's mild and then bam loads more suddenly make an appearance especially on day 4-5.

Also it's pretty likely your other child will get it 10-14 days after their sibling but until she shows signs she will be fine to go to preschool.

SanFranBear · 01/02/2024 17:59

Yes... and one of the initial symptoms is having cough/cold a few days before so matching what's happened to your lo.

Hopefully it's not a bad bout and theu recover quickly Flowers

dementedpixie · 01/02/2024 18:15

Your dc that has had 1 dose is likely to have good immunity against CP (maybe about 80%) so hopefully she shouldn't get it and therefore can't pass it on at preschool

dementedpixie · 01/02/2024 18:18

Once the spots have crusted over they're no longer contagious which is usually about 5-7 days after they 1st appear
