Farty Baby - help!

Baby is 7 weeks old, EBF and gaining weight well. BUT farts (I kid you not) at least 50 times a day. I wouldn’t care but they smell awful and 90% of the time they really upset him - he goes rigid and screams until he passes the gas. Then he’s so upset by it that he’s really hard to settle. He sleeps max 2 hours at a time overnight and when he wakes it’s definitely because of the gas as you can hear (and smell) him passing it as he wakes up. If he’s asleep on me or DH he’ll sleep longer as we can soothe him before he fully wakes with it but that’s not sustainable.

My eldest had CMPA so I’ve been off dairy for just about 4 weeks but it’s made no difference. Have had the latch checked in case he’s taking in air and it seems ok. I’ve had mastitis recently but this issue pre dates that. Doctors don’t seem bothered as he’s gaining weight really well and staying on his curve, and I get “some babies are just fussier than others” but it’s horrible seeing him in distress.

So basically, help! Has anyone else ever experienced this? It almost seems like reverse reflux but I’m not sure that’s a thing!

Babies (and grown ups!) do fart a lot. Their digestive systems are obviously very immature and it does take a while for them to settle. You could try a more strict elimination diet (egg, soy) but I'd check with an expert before you do.

It does sound like it might be an intolerance to something, as babies bums don't usually smell. It might be worth discussing more with HV or GP about you eliminating things

Babies bums do smell...! As I recall a kind of yoghurty smell.

I had similar with my little one for the first 12 weeks or so, we tried biogaia probiotic drops on advice of our HV and they seemed to help quite a bit

One of our grandchildren did - I can't recall if they changed milk or were advised to give the baby a few drops of something - I thinnk it happened around when bay was constipated - nothing to worry about but consult the mid-wife and often log-standing mid-wives have a lot of knowledge

Look up baby massage, there are some techniques like bicycling their legs and rubbing gently around their tummy that can help. I’ve also heard about this Frida Baby wind reliever that might help but haven’t tried it personally.

Windi Gas and Colic Reliever

A natural solution for colic and gas, the Windi works instantly and does not require ingestion of any drops or medication. The Windi is a single-use tube that helps babies get rid of excess gas. Designed to be safe and effective, the Windi cannot harm...

Sadly it’s a lot more pungent than a yoghurt smell…
