Kids party's present ideas

Hello, my 8 year old daughter is going to a party next week and I'm getting stressed about buying a present. How much do people usually spend? I never know what to buy and always leave it till last minute and get something rubbish on the way to the party, is this just me? Everyone else always seems so much more organised than me!

Stuff from Claire’s? It’s usually buy 3 get 3 free so have your daughter choose 6 nice bits, gift 3 to the birthday girl and keep 3 for the next party. Stick it in a small gift bag and job done.
(Assuming it’s a girl’s party! Boys I find harder but lego usually goes down well)

£10
buy something your daughter would like?

or a book?

If you can't think of anything and need a last minute thing, a book token/gift card is usually a pretty safe bet. It's not going to wow someone but it's also not going to be offensive or take up much space. That's my go-to for short notice presents for kids I don't know well.

I do £10-20 depending on how well we know the child.

Craft kits always go down well, especially if you aren't sure of the kids likes and dislikes (as a tomboy I'd have hated stuff from Claire's) and the outdoorsy kids have always loved stomp rockets.

GintyMcGinty · 30/01/2024 12:38

£20-25 pounds.

I usually get Lego or crafts and some sweets whether for a boy or girl.

My DD would detest stuff from Claire's

Ask your child what their friend likes.

Amazon voucher

£10

SisSuffragette · 30/01/2024 12:40

I usually spend around £7 or give a tenner in a card. X

ruralwanderer · 30/01/2024 12:41

I tend to budget £5-£10 for a generic kid from my child's class. Up to £20 for a child they really like and play with lots. Any clue what the child likes? Hobbies/interests etc? Can your daughter shed any light?

For kids I don't know well I tend to either buy something crafty (particularly if The Works or Hobbycraft have a good sale on), books or something I know my child would like.

Good luck! Smile

Squishmallow.

mondaytosunday · 30/01/2024 14:10

£10. When you go buy your own daughter presents for her birthday buy some similar things for gifts. I used to have a gift cupboard, and stocked up on hair accessories when Accessorize had a sale. In secondary parties are fewer then it's just a tenner in a card.

Girls like Lego too

Dinoland · 30/01/2024 14:13

I think it depends on how close they are as friends. It's also worth asking your child what their friend is into.
At the moment, my DD's friends seem to be really into loom bands, werewolves (!), Lego and tamagotchi.

BlueRaincoat1 · 30/01/2024 14:14

I try hard not to spend more than £10. My son was 8 recently, he got a few £10s in cards, so feel other parents think similar. Less is obv fine. You can get lego kits for under £10, or a TY squishmallow thing. Cheap craft kits often aren't very good. DS also got things like a book, a mug, a 3d puzzle, a sports top.

Thedance · 30/01/2024 14:16

What sort of things would your daughter like to get from her friends for her birthday? I would use that as a guide. And spend around £10.

Dinoland · 30/01/2024 14:16

Some of the suggestions here re hair accessories! Honestly, we really do our girls a disservice. Boys get Lego which means they learn to follow an instruction manual, build something or be entirely creative. Girls get to put pretty things in their hair. I know this isn't the point on the thread but please don't buy hair accessories!

InTheRainOnATrain · 30/01/2024 15:25

DD and her friends like hair accessories because they have long hair, need it off their face and it’s the only way to personalise their school uniform. Not sure why that’s a ‘please don’t’ unless you know the girl in question won’t like it?! The last present we bought (from Claire’s) was a set of pens and fuzzy writing book because the girl likes writing stories and a poppit because DD said she collects them. The party before that we gave the girl a jewellery making set as she’s always giving out homemade jewellery to the other girls at school. And FWIW DD hates lego. We’ve tried! None of the other girls like it either despite the fact that almost all of the boys do. They’re entitled to like what they like 🤷‍♀️And DD loves hot wheels cars so it’s not just traditionally girlie stuff that she’s into. They’re individuals after all.

OP asking your DD would be your best bet. She’ll know better than any of us after all! Budget wise I’d do £10-20 depending on finances and if it’s a good friend 😄

Himawarigirl · 30/01/2024 16:32

Does your dd not know the birthday child very well? Mine would usually have an idea of what their friend would like. If they like reading then a book your child has enjoyed is a good bet. Or my dd and her friends have all liked lights for their bedrooms for ages, like this or so many other alternatives deal:%20ONEWAY%20Night%20Light%20for%20Kids,%20Cat%20Lamp%20Cute%20Night%20Light%20for%20Kids%20Room%20Nursery%20Baby%20Toddler%20Teen%20Kawaii%20Room%20Decor,Rechargeable%20Silicone%20Dimmable%20Cat%20Night%20Light%20with%20Timer%20&%207%20Colors(4.1%22x4.1%22%20x5.2%22)%20https%3A//amzn.eu/d/aZinNfb or EasyULT Wooden Book Lamp, LED Folding Book Light Magnetic USB Rechargeable Mood Lighting Creative Night Light for Decor, Practical and Beautiful Decorative Lights (12 9 2.5cm) https://amzn.eu/d/drw6fQk
