Increasing bottle rejection as day goes on

My baby has CMPA and has been on hypoallergenic formula for months now. However right from beginning (even when combo feeding) he has been fussy with bottle, even when I know he is starving. When he rejects the bottle he is grizzly and acts over tired (he is on a very good sleep schedule so that can’t be the case). He is so bad at bedtime that he often goes to bed with no bottle at all and I have to dreamfeed. It’s so stressful as my poor toddler keeps missing bedtime stories as I’m dealing with a really sad and cross bab. He has tongue tie cut at birth so can’t be that. Any ideas???

My daughter had feeding aversions from reflux and the dairy free formulas are very thin. It could also be an additional allergy. My daughter also has a soya and coconut allergy and meant that alfamino was the only formula available to her at the time
My daughter only accepted the bottle when we stopped breastfeeding cold turkey at 10 months

we had feeding aversions with breastfeeding too. I remember one low point was me giving her a feed lay on the bathroom floor us both in our birthday suit having given her a quick bath to calm her down followed by skin to skin afterwards. She generally fed better lying down and not being moved for an hour not even to the upright position recommended but also needed high dose omperazole and as much gaviscon as we could fit in her and later domperidone.

Did they get their tongue tie cut? If so could it have reattached as tongue tie can also cause reflux

My CMPA baby also had bottle aversion. I highly recommend Rowena Bennett's book about it. We followed most of her advise and, whilst it was a bit stressful, it did seem to help.

The CMPA formulas are also best to taste a bit gross so the doctor suggested that we put vanilla in it which helped too. We still put vanilla in it now (just a lot less than we did at the start!). Might be worth a go?

Good luck! We spent months with difficult feelings and I know how miserable it can be!

Coconut allergy?? How did you find that out? I’ve been giving him loads of coconut yoghurt since I’ve started weaning as I thought you can’t be allergic to it?

Thanks so much. I have vanilla in my cupboard. How much did you use? I have read her book and it really helped for a few weeks and then we fell right back into the issues. Her book never solved that tricky bedtime bottle though!

Sorry two more questions, what dose Omeprazole? We are on 10mg morning and 5mg at night. We don’t use infant gaviscon as use carobel to thicken, out of interest why gaviscon? Thanks

There's also a Facebook group following Rowena Bennett's plan where you can get great advice 💐

I use an infacol squirter (just easier haha) and put one squirt in each bottle. As he drank more we just kept the same amount of vanilla so it's not actually that much compared to milk (his usual bottle is 240ml and bedtime is 270ml)

Thanks - what’s it called?

Everything in here. Mine was exactly the same, rowenas method saved us and ds finally started happily drinking milk at 10 months. He has long lasting food aversion though and is now still having a litre of fortified barista oat milk at night/overnight for low weight.

You can be allergic to absolutely anything!

My daughter has 20 food allergies including the coconut, soya and dairy. Her oddest allergy is onions!

She is also allergic to carob used to make carobel which is why we stuck with gaviscon. We needed 3mg/kg of omperazole but maxed out at the total dose of 20mg once a day when she was 5 months and 6.7kg. It then couldn't be increased until she turned 2y. She was then on 25mg (2 mg/kg) until 3.5y when she was upped to 20 mg twice a day which is just under 3 mg/kg. If you multiply their weight by 3 you will get their maximum dose of omperazole for under 1s I think but it can't go above 20mg.

She screamed when I ate certain food when I was breastfeeding.
At first it seemed completely random but I kept lots of food and behaviour diaries and slowly identified trends. I took foods out waited for us to have a run of good days and tested the food to see if she screamed. With time we added other symptoms including feeding refusals, having to be held and couldn't be kept occupied, she was sick more and had loose nappies. After I identified about 12 of her allergies I went through the early diaries and she was having 2 or 3 allergens per meal every day which explains why it seemed so unconnected at first.
She's 3 now and gets rashes and loose stools

My youngest is also allergic to dairy, coconut and soya (he is also allergic to eggs.) We found out through trial and error, same as the PP we kept a food diary and I paid attention to what I was eating too as I was breastfeeding.
