2 and half week old breastfed baby not pooing

Baby is exclusively breastfed and has not opened bowels for 2 days. Baby latches well and has a good feed. Plenty of wet nappies. Baby has begun to strain and seem in pain now. Help!

My two ebf babies were opposite extremes as newborns - one did a poo with every nappy change (at least that's how it felt at the time), while her younger brother pooed once a week like clockwork. I think I remember being told that anything up to a week is normal in breastfed babies, but if you're worried you could give the health visitor or midwife a quick call?

It is quite normal for an exclusively breastfed newborn to not poo for a few days, I believe it's up to a week even!
But if you're worried you could try and look up so baby massage techniques to help relieve some pain?

Popping on to add there's a few things you can do to help if they're straining. Bicycle legs, massaging gentle clockwise circles around their tummy, or laying them on their tummy and rubbing the small of their back. But straining is probably wind rather than poo, I think constipation is unusual if a baby's exclusively breastfed.

Before 6 weeks old all babies including EBF should poo at least once a day. Any less is a red flag for insufficient milk intake or other possible issues. You need to get her checked out IMO.

After 6 weeks old it’s ok for EBF babies to go up to a week between bowel movements but not before.

This. Please get your latch checked as occasionally we see babies who are "latching well" but what the mum means is "it doesn't hurt" and actually the latch isn't great. Is baby gaining weight nicely or has weight gain slowed?
