Kid bit my child on the arm.

My child is 5 years old.
A fellow pupil in his classroom bit him in the arm and he bled slightly and its left a mark.
This hasn’t happened before. He started school in September.

He told me he told the teacher who told him to step away from him. The boy apologised (not sure if this was prompted by the teacher). I couldn’t get much info out of him other than that. He says the boy is still his friend.

The teacher didn’t mention the incident with us when we picked him up. It all came from our son.

  1. Should the teacher have told us?
  2. Should we ask the teacher about what happened or leave it as it was the first time and seems she dealt with it?
  3. If we do ask her via email, how do we word it?

Thank you

The teacher should have told you and recorded it in the incident book.

Make sure you clean the wound well and I would phone 111 to seek medical advice or go to your local minor injuries because bite injuries can lead to infections due to the bacteria in the mouth especially if the skin is broken. Sometimes they prescribe antibiotics for human bites. Also find out when your childs last tetanus immunisation was as they will want to know.

They should definitely have told you and there should have been a form for you to sign. Mind you that’s if your ds has got the story right, it’s easy for 5 year olds to get confused. Either way if there’s any injury he’s got at school they should tell you.

Just pop a polite email to the teacher asking if she was aware of the injury, and mention how your ds describes getting it.
