3yo DD cystitis? But urine testing clear?

Has anyone had experience of this?

My 3 year old DD has, I believe, classic cystitis symptoms. She often tries to wee and can’t, and says ‘hot! Hot!’ and looks uncomfortable.

Having had cystitis many times myself I was convinced it was that. First visit to doctor, urine sample tested negative on both the strip test and the culture, so we decided it wasn’t.

second trip to doctors (Different doctor) 8 days later after symptoms continued, and he tested via the strip only. Said no, definitely fine, no glucose or ketones or any indication of anything wrong whatsoever. Told us to leave it a few more weeks and come back if still a concern.

She doesn’t have a temperature and is fairly well in herself, albeit has a chesty cough and snotty cold.

Googling this has revealed dozens of pages about how UTI’s often do not show on urine tests! I did try to suggest this to the doctor but he dismissed it.

Might anyone have experience of this and have advice? Do I go back and try a third doctor?!

Hi OP. Sorry to hear your DD is unwell. I would go back to GP as it takes a while for infections to show on the strips.

I have purchased some testing strips off Amazon & they're great for having at home so I can test DD before calling the gp
Highly recommend

Had the exact same thing with my DD roughly same age. Turned out to be threadworms! Causing all the same symptoms as a uti. Realised it was only happening in the evening and after a week we saw the dreaded worms!

Have you actually had a look to see if she's sore? Sometimes my DD4 will say it hurts when she wees but it's because she's a little bit sore and needs some sudocreme x

Agree that dip tests for the under 5s are unreliable. But, it is a classic age to get vulvovaginitis as they are getting more independent and wiping the wrong way. If it doesn't hurt to pee in the bath, then it will be a problem on the outside, not a uti.

Make sure she isn't using soaps or bubble bath or wipes. You could try some canesten but if she isn't getting better then you will need to take her back to GP.

Definitely no irritation on vulva

but threadworms always a possibility! We will treat for that and see - thank you so much :)

I'd be thinking worms. If she is scratching herself in the night it will hurt when she pees. Give her some ovex.

My 4 year old has had this too - she even got antibiotics and still complained it stung. She didn’t have a temperature though and didn’t seem unwell (when I’ve had UTI I’ve felt ill as well as the stinging).

went back to the doctor who suggested canestan as it may be thrush which is causing stinging when she wees. She hasn’t complained for a few days now so hopefully that’s sorted it.

Thanks everyone for all the help. She’s had ovex for worms and some canesten thrush cream and seems much much happier :)

(I just wish one of the GP’s I saw could have suggested these! Ah well!)
