prefolds are not great for breast fed poo which tends to be explosive so shaped nappies are better for that.

moondog · 19/03/2008 21:55

I used them and they were ace.
In fact I have a huge pile (all perfectly servicable) that I want to flog.

Enough for from birth to 3 years.

lackaDAISYcal · 19/03/2008 21:57

they're prefolds aren't they?

afaik you either love prefolds or hate them.

I would go for a few different types terries/prefolds/shaped/pockets initially and then you can see what you like or what suits as different shaped babies suit different nappies.

you can get some really good second hand bargains on the classified ads here and on www.usednappies.co.uk. That will keep your costs down

Would also second trying a variety before deciding for definate.

I use terries and muslins and mainly motherease wraps. But I wouldn't recommend starting with a 'flat' system as it does take a bit of confidence, it could end up putting you off. Wouldn't even consider shaped nappies now though, and I'm onto baby number 3!

Personally, I didn't really like prefolds either, foudn terries much more versatile - but I have always had 2 in nappies so wanted something that could suit both

i use prefolds with my dd and i think they are great, she was breastfed and we didnt have many probs with poo.
i haven't used any other brands on my children. so can't comment on what are best/worst in my opinion
i did childmind a little girl in motherease nappies, they were shaped ones that poppered (not sure what they were called just definately motherease) they were nice nappies although did find they leaked a lot especially in summer when she drank a lot more, used to have to put boosters in them.

BigBadMouse · 19/03/2008 22:43

They are one of the better makes of Prefold if that is the way you want to go.

Again, I'm not a big fan of prefolds for mobile children as they tend to leak. They are more likely to work well in younger babies who have a tendancy to do less runny nappy explosions IMO. That said, I don't like Motherease nappies either - find them very over-rated, poor fitting, not very absorbant etc - their wraps are fab though.

I would recommend you find a local nappy advisor here and find out if they run a trial kit system. You might be very surprised at what you end up liking the most once you've tried a few. Also don't forget that many local councils offer a financial incentive for using cloth such as vouchers, interest free loans.

Second hand sites are fab. Prefolds have a poor second hand value as they are relatively cheap to buy new and weigh a fair bit. It's often just as cheap to buy new than pay for second hand plus postage.

Ceolas · 19/03/2008 22:45

Lots of people use them with nappy nippas to help contain the poo.

No personal experience though.

ok thanks for the advise i see it makes sense to try a few out before i buy a set.with my dd years ago i used terries just the plain flat ones but switched to disposables for my boys, but they have so sensitive skin and have psoriasis over 80% of their bodies so im tryin to give this baby the best start when hes born incase we have a similar problem.

I would have thought the Dutch left us in the cust with cloth nappies?

moondog · 20/03/2008 08:34

dust

Nappyzone · 20/03/2008 09:31

If you want to pay my flights and put me up for a 2 week vacation i would gladly come over with a sample of fluff . I thought so too - i have lots of customers from denmark and switzerland if thats near you ....

Bouncingturtle · 20/03/2008 09:55

I use Bambino Prefolds.

Pros - Cheap and cheerful, quick to dry, don't take up loads of storage space, and wash well.
Cons - can be a bit of a faff for those not used to them (for example for occasional babysitters). Plus not brilliant at containing breastfed baby poo - have had a few leak, and even when they don't leak out have had to wash the wrap as well as nappy. If you are just using prefolds, you need about 4 wraps for comfort. After a leak poo I normally handwash the wrap if not putting a wash on straight away, if you hand wash immediately the poo comes off pretty easily then just hang to dry.
They are not great as a night nappy. I use the prefolds in a shaped nappy as a booster at night - my favourite is the Motherease all in one. Not cheap, but since I only use at night I only have a couple.

pelvicflawed · 20/03/2008 13:22

We bought a birth to potty pack and hated them - loads of leaks and just got in a big mess (ebayed them so we didn't lose too much money). That said some people in my ant-natal group used them and got on ok with them. We use motherease with a booster and have found them fine for day - though need something better for night. Definetly try before you buy a load - you might get on ok with them we just didn't.

bonniefromboot · 20/03/2008 13:27

i think it's a matter of confidence etc...
With dd used tots bots and they were great. then sold them....
now got ds and bought some prefolds off ebay £4.99 for 6 i think, plus some wraps and am very happy.
wash well, dry quickly, good containment etc...
I think if you get a goood fit and a good wrap then they are fine. IMO it's the wrap that makse the difference not so much the nappy inside.

killarney · 20/03/2008 15:27

I hated prefolds and much prefer shaped nappies... but, everyone's different I suppose.

They do make great cleaning cloths though!

Jane99Thomas · 20/03/2008 18:08

I luv prefolds - as previously said, its a matter of personal choice. They dry quickly & slimmer fitting.

I only started using them when my son was weaned so have no experience of explosive breastpoo.

I prefer Junior Joy Prefolds - the supreme ones, which has 8 layers in the middle & 4 layers on the outside, excellent for heavy wetters, on older babies.

I think there are cheaper prefold options rather than the Bambineo Birth to Potty Set. Buy the prefolds & wraps separately. Again, its a case of find the right wrap to suit too.

I have tried seveal shaped nappies - Tots Bots, Motherease, Diddy Diaper & the prefold is my favourite!

earthmummy · 22/03/2008 12:08

Hi

All I can say is please try different types of nappies before committing to one brand.

I have met quite a lot of mums who have bought a certain birth to potty package and hated them.

Is there a nappy loan kit in your local area, these are a great idea as you get to try out different brands before you buy? Find out if there is a local cloth nappy group too.

I agree with the feedback here on finding a nappy advisor. The web sites recommended are useful too. Nothing beats seeing the nappies in real life, it can be a bit overwhelming looking at all the different types of nappies on-line.

Good luck.

pelvicflawed · 22/03/2008 12:19

Good advice earthmummy - we only got back on track with real nappies after getting advice from Suffolk Real Nappy Network (We don't live there - just visiting relatives and found their shop)- without their advice and seeing lots of nappies we probably would have given up on the whole thing as a bad job - which is a shame as once you get sorted real nappies are so easy.

Jane99Thomas · 22/03/2008 20:56

There are lots of wraps out there for prefolds:

Prorap - a very good fit. I find that the binding on the waist/legs a bit scratchy though.

Diaperap - this is my favourite because its 60% cotton with a waterproof lining. Again, an excellent fit. The binding on the legs/waist is much softer than the prorap.

Bummis - I havent tried this but its designed for prefolds.

JingleyJen · 22/03/2008 20:58

we used them and loved them although we swapped wraps for Prowraps.
