Smoke on toys

Hi all, does anyone know if smoke washes out of toys? I bought a bundle of Blue Nose friends on Vinted for my little girl and they reek of smoke! 😭
I know I can wash with vinegar and wash more than once to remove the smell as have done with other items before however these are toys for my baby.
I struggle with anxiety as it is, and postpartum anxiety has a hold on me further, SIDS being my main worry.
We have never been and don’t plan to become smokers and don’t allow smoking around the baby whatsoever.
I know smoke is something that can be a risk factor to Sid’s and so that’s what makes me wary of the toys, even if washed. Will it stay in the fibers and be a risk?
My little girl is currently only 9 weeks old so of course won’t have anything in her cot for quite a while and isn’t interested in toys for the most part just yet. I got the toys for when she’s a bit older as like a little comfort as such. My baby has a blue spot birthmark on her nose. The doctor said it may disappear but it may not, and that it’s quite deep under the skin hence why it’s blue not purple or red. I thought the toys may be a nice little thing for her to have if she does keep it as they match her! They are little hand friendly toys regardless.
So does anyone think they’d be washable enough to be safe?
I can request a return, which would be a shame as I was able to select specific ones out of the large bundle this lady had and would have to replace them elsewhere, but at the same time it’s no use to have them sat there unused if I’m too worried to let her have them!

Honestly, I wouldn’t give them to her. I’m as far from anxious as you can get but smoke and babies isn’t something of ever mix.

amswermeeee · 23/01/2024 20:53

I don't know what they are..will they go through a washing machine or dish washer?
But it would be prob be a no from me too. Especially if they reek. Too much third hand fumes. It will also just make you more anxious.

HalloumiGeller · 23/01/2024 20:55

I personally wouldn't give them to my child (ew). It beggars belief that this person actually sold them to you when they stink!

Just wash them and see what they look like and smell like afterwards. Try not to over worry on this, I'm sure not one ever got sick from some residual fumes left on a second hand toy. If they look and smell ok after a wash they will be fine. Some people smoke for 40+years and are still ok health-wise. I know you say you suffer from anxiety but please try to keep a realistic view of the risks. In this instance they are really non existent.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 23/01/2024 20:57

Honestly I’m no anxious and I’d return them- next time check smoke free/ pet free home

OddityOddityOdd · 23/01/2024 21:02

The thing is smokers don't realise they, their houses and their possessions stink. You can smell it on their kids. Especially on the kids bookbags and lunch boxes when they come to school, in their cars, in their houses and standing next to them in queues. Smokers think they are cool but they are basically just stinky, this us why they can donate stinky items to a charity shop because they don't know they stink, they just think they're cool.

MamaMeggie · 23/01/2024 21:08

Thank you all, really thought I might just be over worrying (as usual haha) about this but you’ve all reassured me that I should indeed return them and my worries are legitimate. Honestly I also can’t believe someone could sell them stinking of smoke either! However do agree with @OddityOddityOdd that smokers don’t realise it’s on their stuff! They’re nose blind to it.

Just wish people would say they’re a smokers household but I guess that would put off sellers.
I have learnt to ask now! Pets are fine, we have 4 cats and our neighbour has dogs that we have introduced to the baby but smoke free is definitely going to be something I ask about going forward

Disgusting, just return them. I’m not snobby about second hand clothes but soft toys give me the ick. Just get her 1 new one if you’re into the blue nose thing, she doesn’t need loads and she’ll probably imprint on something random anyway- my DD has a weird doll my mum bought her and my DS’s favourite is the teddy his nursery gave him in their new joiners pack! Nothing I’ve ever bought intending it to be a comforter has ever got more than a second glance.

I agree with you, households with pets I'm fine with, but smoking is a big no no!

I had some paperwork at work the other day that a client had sent back, and my god it STANK 😷

MamaMeggie · 23/01/2024 21:35

@InTheRainOnATrain yeah I get you with used toys, these have tags as were part of a collection rather than used ones so I was just going to remove tags and give to her.
Yeah true, I probably should just go minimal tbh and get her one as have a habit of getting too much of something I’ve newly chosen is a good idea haha.
Oh bless, always the way haha. I work with kids and honestly the amount of parents that say the same, they’ll choose what they choose. Just thought it’s worth a shot, but also maybe she might look back at it as a thoughtful keepsake when she’s older even if it’s not her favourite now

@HalloumiGeller oh yikes, to get onto paperwork in such a short amount of time I’d imagine, that’s terrible! That’s a big smoking problem. Paper for goodness sake, paper! 😩

Nah this isn't something you want to expose your child to

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 23/01/2024 21:42

I would wash them, that should get rid of the smoke. If they didn't smell of it after washing then I wouldn't worry at all about giving them to her. Either that or return.

OddityOddityOdd · 23/01/2024 21:45

Sounds like pet owners owners don't realise their things stink just as much as smokers, trust me they do. The moment a front door or a car door is opened you know if they've got a dog or a tom cat. Don't delude yourself, it's no better.

OddityOddityOdd · 23/01/2024 21:46

I say this as a pet owner.

MamaMeggie · 23/01/2024 21:58

Oh I’m aware pets can be smelly, there’s no delusion but I’d much rather an item smell of an animal or be covered in hair as that can be washed out and doesn’t cause any harm, smoke does cause harm. I mean unless you or your child are allergic to pets but an allergy is different, you’d definitely be checking for pet free homes if that was the case
