What causes the irritation on baby's legs? Nappy? Wrap?

DD (6.5 months) has a pretty persistent red irritated patch at the top of her thigh. Sudocrem works to a degree but it soon flares up again. Is it the nappy elastic? The wrap? Not changing often enough?

She's mostly in Bimbles with a Rikki, Tots or Airflow wrap. None seems to be better than the other. I'm wondering if using prefolds or terries might help as they don't have leg elastic?

I change her every 2-3 hours, but the Bimbles are often very wet in that time.

Any advice/ideas?

Or maybe a wrap with more 'padding' at the leg holes. Does such a thing exist?

My DD had this and I stopped using two parters as I thought i was the wrap elastic. We now use pockets and she is better, but it's still there to a degree. It got pretty bad recently so I went to the doc who thought it was a fungal infection. the canesten he prescribed cleared it right up. It comes back every so often (probavbly due to damp and sticky conditions, but some canesten on it sorts it out pretty quickly. I also give her as much nappy free time in the evening as possible.

hth xx

Try just using the Rikkis for a few days and see if it goes. I found DD very sensitive to exposed PUL, for some reason rikkis are fine but airflows left welts on her poor legs. Haven't used tots. Bummis super whisper wraps are good but not as reliable as rikkis.

how often do you change the wrap? If there is a build up of wee on the binding this might be a contributing factor?

MrsBadger · 19/03/2008 20:02

I found the binding on Nature Babies wraps much softer, but all my MEs are crunchy old secondhand ones so I guess anything would be softer than those.

I probably change the wrap every third change. Or if it's very wet. I did wonder about the Bummis one, the leg bits look well covered and pretty soft.

I have one Nature Babies that's too small now. We only wore it once or twice and it lay at the bottom of the nappy box. Might be worth trying again.

I put all the nappies and wraps on some fancy extra rinsing programme this morning. Had heard about the detergent build up thing. I normally use one tablet for a full load.

Recommended dosage is 2 tabs but I only ever use 1. Even for clothes.

I put it on the timer and got up to it bleeping this morning! So didn't see it rinsing...

It actually looks further up her leg than the wrap elastic. Would it be the nappy elastic? The whole nappy is fleece lined.

can't think it'd be the nappy elastic else you'd have it all round both legs

little bit of eczema/thrush sounds possible

PotPourri · 19/03/2008 20:47

Oh, and forgot to say, could be thrush - and wraps keep reinfecting her, obviously in same place as that is where the spores or whatever are sitting. As you can't wash at high temp, maybe try pouring neat vinegar on that leg binding, and some teatree oil before you put in the nappy bucket. And a few drops of teatree in the rinse cycle (where fabric softner goes) for nappy washes. Teatree is antifungal - and really works

Ceolas · 19/03/2008 20:48

There's a little bit on the other leg but one is rather more fiery. I'd probably ignore it otherwise.

I often wash at 60

DS1 had the same thing and it was thrush that wouldn't go away/kept coming back,I thought it was the binding on the Airflows but changing to Nature Babies didn't help much. The doctor gave us some creams in the end.

I hadn't even considered that the binding on the wraps might be harbouring the thrush....but would tea tree/vinegar be a bit harsh for use on the wraps? I normally use PHP nappy soak in with my nappy wash anyway so my nappies should have been clear of it.

Washersaurus · 19/03/2008 20:55

DS1 also gets eczema patches in that area - we are awash with lotions and potions
