My son is 10 and never had chicken pox, is this normal. He's been exposed to it quite a few times but never been ill with it.

@Lifeinlists the government haven't responded to the recommendation of adding it to routine vacs and offering to older children who haven't had CP. I'm trying to decide if I should go ahead and spend £150 on having dd done or wait and see if gov will implement it for free within a year. I thought them ignoring the recommendation for 3 months meant they weren't likely to - am I wrong?

@PurpleSaucepan I read that once the JCVI has recommended it to the Government (which they did in November) then they do accept the recommendation.Sort of a formality. Can't find a link but it was on something like the BBC News website.

How long the implementation takes however...

@PurpleSaucepan although it's still possible to have shingles after the vaccine, it's far less likely than if you'd had chicken pox.

DS had it aged 2. Had three pustules next to his eye that burst and created an hideous eye infection, which apparently could cause encephalitis if left untreated . DS was on industrial strength antibiotics that knocked the poor kid for six. Chickenpox can be nasty - would totally advise people to get the vaccine if they have the opportunity.

My son (age 4) has just had his second dose of the chicken pox vaccine. Like others on this thread I was debating whether it was worth paying £130 if it is imminently going to be offered for free. But there was an outbreak at nursery just before Christmas which gave us a stressful couple of weeks as we had flights booked to visit family. Thankfully we escaped that time but once back from that trip I immediately booked to get him vaccinated. Peace of mind that we won't have to cancel holiday plans/family visits/take time off work etc made it worth the money for us.
