Baby poo smells like vinegar

Hi all
I have a 17 week old who has had a change in bowel habits since about 10 weeks.
He was pooping normally like mustard seeds etc up until his first vaccinations and a week or so after I noticed that his poops smelt very acidic and vinegary. He now only tends to go once or twice a week.
im really worried it might be an allergy to something I’m eating which I really hope is not the case, he gets quite a lot of wind too that seems to be painful in the evenings/bedtime otherwise he’s completely fine and no no other symptoms. I felt like he was reacting to whey/soya from protein shakes I had so stopped but after reading a few other posts people have said this could be related to teething?! now when I think back, this started around the same time he started drooling more and now his gums definitely seem to be bothering him.

wondered if anyone else had had this as I’m really worried it could be some kind of intolerance but can’t help but think that he’d have more symptoms if so? He’s very gassy especially at bedtime but again I’m not sure if he’s just a colicky baby or what. Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi, my LO did pretty much exactly this after his vaccinations- 2/3 days of green vinegar poos and only pooed twice a week! If he’s not in pain when pooing then it’s pretty normal I think for a breastfed baby. Are they poonamis each time? My baby’s were copious!
He then got the green poo again when actually teething at 6 months old for over a week, and now he’s properly on solids it’s all different again (once or twice a day and they are ‘chunkier’ 😆).

Teething! That vinegary smell was the case for all mine (bear in mind they can be teething for months before any teeth actually come through 😵‍💫)

Yeah my 10 month old has just popped a new tooth and her poos have been vile and vinegary for a few days now. They start teething early, there's a lot of movement under the gums before they come out. The vinegar smell comes from all of the excess saliva they produce when teething

This is so reassuring thank you all so much! I was soooo worried he had CMPA and really didn’t want it to be that. His poops aren’t green. Normal yellow colour just lots of it when it does come and he does wriggle around a bit and when he’s pooping! I only recently heard teething can start way earlier than when they cut teeth too so looks like I better buckle up for the long ride ahead! I think he has a reaction to whey when I have protein shakes I feel like he gets a bad tummy but again, maybe it could just be the teething pain? He passes wind quite a lot and sometimes wriggles and arches until it comes out. I was having protein shakes with oats right after having him everyday and all throughout pregnancy (had a C-section too so was an easy breakfast!) but then noticed what I thought could be correlation but now I think about it could it be down to the teething?!

Teething poos imo.

My boy is the same! He's 21 weeks today, also has many vinegary poos, although some are more normal and sweet smelling.

I always assumed it was something I had eaten but teething makes sense as he's very dribbly at the moment!

DreadPirateRobots · 17/01/2024 21:01

It's teething. Their dribble gets more acidic and it gives them those vinegary poos.

Me again! Baby has also started refluxing quite a bit in last few days. Today after every feed he’s bringing bits back up. Is this linked?

My daughter has awful poos due to allergies and teething and has awful reflux in its own right and caused by allergies.

Keep a food diary for a week and every thing about your daughter temperament, feeding nappies etc. we found she would have to be held and couldn't be kept occupied about 2h after me eating something she was allergic too but it was 36-72h before she had loose stools.

Given you had to stop the whey and soya protein shakes because she didn't respond well I would say cmpa and soya allergy would be worth exploring. If you wanted to go down that route take out all dairy and don't use any soya dairy and meat replacements. Foods with soya flour or soya lectins are ok. If you find everything improves after a few weeks your could try some soya products but if you don't take out all soya. About half of babies react to both soya and dairy.

I’m wondering if the reflux was caused by the teething powders as he’s not had it like this before and aside from the poops which started the sane time he started dribbling has no other symptoms ?

A lot of teething powder contain dairy as they use food grade lactose which has a high cross contamination risk with dairy proteins
