HELP - baby kissed with a cold sore!

My baby is 5 months old and I kiss him whilst playing - lips included.

I ate acidic food 2 days ago and got my usual bumps on the top of my bottom lip (usually happens when I eat anything sharp). I've suffered since a child with ulcers and I know they aren't contagious but today the GP said it looks more like a cold sore and prescribed tablets and cream.

I've never had one before! Neither has my partner. I'm mortified and distressed, checking my baby to see how his face and mouth are looking. He's well in himself but I'm kicking myself as I've been kissing him with an active sore which I now know 😭 has anyone had this?

Is it a guarantee he will catch it? I'm mortified 💔 Im going to be in this constant worry for weeks, checking his temp and face 😞

So many people have the virus op and they will probably never know the true figure because as gp says people can have it and never break out.

Hope your mind is put at rest a bit. You can catch up on lovely squishy baby kisses soon!!

Thank you @Megifer you've made me feel slightly better.

I did originally think it was a canker sore, but they do look a little different to what it now looks like after using the cream 🥹

Ughh I'm such a worrier and my brain cannot switch off from this! I can't stop checking his little face. Reassuring to hear that you've not passed it onto your babies (even when not careful)

Mine tend not to start with a tingle. Instead I get:

  • Very dry lips for a day or two
  • Then a bump, like I've bitten it or knocked my lip
  • It can stay as a bump, or blister - that lasts around 2/3 days
  • If it does blister then it will scab, and eventually heal.

Takes 5-7 days total, but I have had them for years and did used to get a tingle. The very first time I also felt flu-ey which I don't think you have?

All the same, worth taking the pills and using the cream to echo @Megifer I've suffered since I was a child, never had a partner who did so it really is a Russian roulette of who it passes to/who gets them

@GreyBlackLove no, no fever or any of the symptoms other than the lesion.

Are you extra careful when you have a breakout with your partner?

Again, my partner hasn't ever had one and hasn't caught this so it really does go to show some people are just carriers.

I has a stressful Christmas period (families eh!) and then been out in the cold so points to it I guess 🥹

If he starts with a fever or low level blotchy rash, or Hx eczema, get him checked out.

Yes, when I think I might have an outbreak coming (the super dry lips) or do have an outbreak I use separate glasses, cutlery etc and change my toothbrush after. We don't share face cloths, but that all gets boil washed. Any lipsticks that I've used within a day or two gets replaced.

That being said, I've definitely had the odd breakout where I missed the signs, we've kissed/shared glasses and he thankfully has never shown symptoms.

And I'd add that my sister who loves to steal my makeup and definitely swiped the odd lipstick before I binned them growing up hasn't had Cold sores either - totally pot luck

Good to know - things I've never had to do or consider! 🥹 @GreyBlackLove

Update for anyone wondering or who comes across the post. My baby has no signs and hasn't been unwell 😊

Whilst on the topic, what's everyone's thoughts on close family members kissing baby's head/hands/cheeks? I see mixed thoughts but I mean obviously where no cold sores are visible and family member is not unwell.
