how can a nappy rash be so severe in one night?

1 year old slept at my parents this weekend for one night. she was away for 24 hours. when i dropped her she had no signs of a nappy rash. i picked her up and it’s so bad that it’s open in places as in looks like a layer of skin has came off - oozing clear fluid. the rest of the nappy rash is all spotty and lumpy and she was hysterical last night when i changed her. i’ve had to get her canesten from the pharmacy but i can’t help but wonder wtaf they’ve done for it to become that severe from nothing overnight? in my 3 years of parenting i have never ever let my kids get nappy rash to this extreme?? all i can think is that they’ve left her nappy on a ridiculous amount of time which makes me worried about them having her but i don’t know if im just jumping to conclusions here

Could the child be teething? My eldest once got a nappy rash in the time it took to walk upstairs to get her changed, because when she was teething she had very acidic poos.

Very good point. Teething can sometimes play havoc with a toddler's body, including low fevers.

Metanium always worked like a charm. You only need a light layer, but it's very effective.

Plenty of nappy off time too.

Recommend this for several nappy rash - clears things up in a day or two!

Did they use a different brand of nappy or wipes? Did they use any sort of cream? Did she eat anything new? Did they give her a bath, she might only react to soap on especially sensitive spots?

Sorry - totally forgot I’d even made this thread! Thanks for all the advice! The canesten seems to be taking the worst of it away thankfully and she’s not crying when I change her nappy (was inconsolable every change yesterday poor thing).

I haven’t raised it with my parents yet as I think they’ll get defensive and be funny with me - I don’t want to point fingers if it is something that can just happen, I’ve just never experienced a nappy rash go from 0-100 like this before myself!

Shes had 2 new teeth cut through a couple of weeks ago and obviously they’re still coming in properly - maybe this? She does poo a lot at the minute, but then as soon as I notice I change it (I don’t know if they’ve just not noticed somehow and left it?)

Also can’t count nappies as they have their own at their house. Might check what brand nappies/wipes they have though incase it is a reaction but then she stayed the week before and was fine

I think being left in one bad poo is enough to do this, my DC2 gets it. If he's got a bit of a dodgy tummy his poo will literally burn his skin, he doesn't even need to be left in the nappy that long. It happened at nursery last week and I know they are on top of changing them.

I would find out facts before jumping to dramtic conclusions
