3yo that hates duvets/blankets

Just turned 3yo DS. Slept in a cot with a sleeping bag until a few months ago when he started climbing out. He’s tall for his age so getting decent sleeping bags that fitted properly was also tricky (and expensive! 😅)

Now in a toddler bed but HATES the duvet. I’ve persevered for months hoping he’ll get used to it but it’s just not happening. Every time he stirs in the night he pushes it to the bottom of the bed. He’s then waking lots and it seems to be when the temperature dips so I’m assuming he’s cold. I’m currently going in multiple times a night to cover him back up when he’s asleep. Then inevitably he comes in to my bed at 2am or so and wants cuddled all night - but won’t let me have the duvet near him so I’m freezing 😅

Sleeping bags are a no-go because he can now walk about and he falls in them. I ordered a couple from LoveToDream which are quilted all-in-ones with fold over feet so that he can walk properly but he hates them 😅 wakes up complaining about the zip hurting him or the fabric all twisting round.

Can anyone give any advice? Any other duvet haters?! Any particularly cosy pjs/bed socks out there for 3yo.
Currently costing me a fortune in heating so any advice is appreciated 😅

Fleecy onesies and cosy socks might be good

bettynutkins · 14/01/2024 22:05

I also would say fleecy onesie. Pyjamas underneath maybe even a vest underneath pyjamas if you still think he's cold.

I would avoid onesies for urgent wee reasons (my ds is 4...). You can get some thick velour pjs, lots on sale atm at m&s, etc. And thick welly socks.

What is it about duvets? What's different from the sleeping bag? You could try coverless, or just those soft fluffy blankets instead? My dd much prefers blankets to duvets.

bobomomo · 14/01/2024 22:07

Mine had fleece sleepsuits with feet in, had those sticky pads on the feet bottom. I used them mostly camping or when very cold as they did have duvets from 6 months, no such thing as sleeping bags then

Sofabum · 14/01/2024 22:07

DS is the same, we did jojomaman thick sleep suits until 2-3 ish and now at 4 he has a fleecy onesie and my bed socks.

Inyourwildestdreams · 14/01/2024 22:07

@DNLove Thank you. We’ve tried some similar to this and he hates them so reluctant to invest in more 🙈

Traditional flannelette sheets and blanket or bedspread tucked in.

@Mumaway Thank you 😊 he’s currently in a vest, fleece pjs and thermal socks.

Onesies he struggles with as he panics about the toilet and not being able to get it off 😅

@bettynutkins thank you. He is in fleece pjs and vest but struggles with a onesie as he panics about not being able to undo it for the toilet!

Not sure if they still make it, but Gro used to do a duvet that you could zip / popper onto a mattress sheet.

JigglyOhara · 14/01/2024 22:14

My 3 yo is the same. I got her a sleeping bag on Amazon for age 4-6 years and it has a zip along the bottom so her feet are free in it. I would persevere with the sleeping bag, he’ll get used to it like before

@Blessedbethefruitz thank you! That’s the type of pjs I have him in at the moment - although the M&S ones are a firm “no” 😂 he calls them his “slippery pyjamas” as they’re very silky feeling and the legs ride up easily when he moves in he’s 😅

No idea what it is about duvets. It’s covers of all kinds really. Hates blankets too. He’s never been a fan at all! Would never take a blanket in the car/buggy either. Even if I was to get him to cuddle up and watch a film or something with me, he’d want to be on top of the blanket. He says he “just doesn’t like them” 🙄 He’s quite a fidgety sleeper and don’t think he likes it wrapping round him or moving as he moves.

@hauntedvagina never heard of that at all! I’ll have a look. I’m assuming that’s to stop it moving etc?

What about a proper kids sleeping bag? The ones that have an animal head as a pillow. He can unzip it, leave it half zipped while falling asleep and when you're going to bed you can pull the zip up fully.

Inyourwildestdreams · 14/01/2024 22:20

@JigglyOhara I’d be quite happy for him to stay in proper sleeping bags but he gets up in the night and he falls wearing them.

Exactly that. Hope you find something!

My 15mo is like this. Will not ever have a blanket over him and definitely not a sleeping bag. Oh and just to be awkward will not wear a onesie either 😂 I ended up buying thermal leggings and long sleeved vest and he wears those under his PJ's. Having the heating on all night just costs too much!

@DNLove I would assume he’d just be very angry whenever he woke up in the night and couldn’t push the covers off but it’s not something I’ve tried 🤔 I’ll have a look into it, thanks!

@Devilsmommy Yeah I DSs radiator turned on and most of the rest of the ones in the house turned off at night because it costs a fortune!! I just have the thermostat in his room so his radiator cuts on and off to keep the heat constant (ish!)
To make it worse, DH snores TERRIBLY, especially when he’s warm so I’m trying to keep the house cold for him and hot for DS 😂

@Inyourwildestdreams 🤣 what a nightmare. Don't know if it would work for you but the thermals definitely made a difference in our house 😁

DNLove · 14/01/2024 22:30

Also to say my daughter (4) loves her room cold, if I pull the duvet over her she will kick it off or will have it low down with a leg out. I go into her room and find it freezing and she's happy as Larry with the temperature. Gives it if its too warm. I have a single duvet in a double duvet cover and I tuck the excess duvet cover under the mattress so it doesn't move too far and she can easily pull it back over her if she wants to add its kinda fixed in place.

Bumble84 · 14/01/2024 22:31

There’s something called ‘ready for bed’ which is fitted all round and zips you in. Or what about an actual sleeping bag, not baby grow bag.

olderthanyouthink · 14/01/2024 22:32

After a lot of misery and trial and error I got DD a heated under blanket last year and that worked great. She would have been just 4 I think when I got it.

The rooms warmer now so it's on a timer switch to go on at bedtime then off for a while till about 4am when she was getting cold again, stops her getting too hot.

LittleOwl153 · 14/01/2024 22:33

My lad wears something like these for cub camp... with a good pair of thick socks. He has been known to out a pair of thermals under them on occasions.

I kind of get it. I currently have a big fleecy jumper which I am tending to put on over pj's (from sainsburys PJ range) which means I don't need the covers over my top half... but I suspect Peri is the cause of mine!
