Hi, my daughter is almost 1, she had bacterial tonsillitis last week and was prescribed penicillin, yesterday around 12am she started throwing up, really forceful, she was sick around six times so we took her to urgent care at the advice of 111, they said it could be the penicillin, and to stop giving it to her as her tonsillitis looked to have cleared anyway. all day yesterday she couldn’t keep anything down so we took her back to the docs they confirmed it wasn’t a sickness bug as there’s no other symptoms and said it could be because of the mucus, skip to this morning around 7am and she still can’t keep her bottle down, has anyone had this before? It’s been over 24 hours now and I’m starting to worry

When did she last wee? If it was 12 hours or more ago then you need to go to A and E. If not try syringing 5ml of dioralyte into her mouth every 5 mins.

Her wees are ok and don’t seem to have changed, she does have diarrhoea though?
thanks for the advice

My 1 year old has had the awful sickness bug. She couldn’t keep anything down and would bring up even sips of water. The sickness itself died down just after 24 hours but then her nappies were terrible for a good week after so whenever she ate, she would be needing completely changed within an hour.
How are her nappies? Is she still having wet nappies? I would syringe 5ml of water or a little sugary drink into her every 5-10 mins. If she’s not having many wet nappies then I’d take her back to a&e to get checked again.

Any doubt take her back

Mads1234 · 12/01/2024 08:32

Do you think that’s what it could be? Realistically it’s been around 31 hours since the sickness started, but that’s the only symptom she has along with a cough and a snotty nose, both docs said different things, but it’s awful for her, I assumed the worse was done when we got up today but then she brought up all of the milk she had drank, maybe we should just stick to baby food instead? Her nappy’s are wet and I haven’t noticed a change there, but she has got diarrhoea now, I’ve been giving her little bits of water from a syringe

It could be, I’d keep a close eye on her and if you’re unsure then definitely no harm in returning to a&e or the gp!
I stayed away from milk for a couple of days as my gp said it would probably unsettle her stomach so we just had some dry toast and very plain foods for a couple of days

Why did they say it couldn't be a sickness bug as there's no other symptoms but she has diarrhoea which surely is another symptom?

It does sound like a sickness bug with those symptoms together but if you're struggling to get her to drink water she may become dehydrated so I think a call to the GP would be a good idea, especially if anything changes or gets worse. No point taking risks when they're that small!

I mean to me that either sounds like Rotavirus sickness bug with the 24 hrs vomiting followed by the shits. Is she still vomiting now?

But if it’s a new cough and runny nose too that sounds more like flu or Covid.

If you are worried call 111 back and reevaluate. Or GP if they’re easy to contact.

That’s what we thought. I think because she had bacterial tonsillitis last week they were concentrated on that and had said she doesn’t have a temp and isn’t crying in pain it couldn’t be a sickness bug. She started nursery in October and has expectedly been poorly a lot since then, but this is the worst she’s been yet and we’ve been told different things by each doctor we’ve seen, I think the formula this morning was bad judgement on my part so I’ll definitely clear away from that for a day or so.
I don’t think I’m too worried right now, I just wish we knew what was causing it and when we can expect it to ease up.
thanks so much for the reply’s!

It’s a stomach bug, you don’t need to have fever or pain. Shes vomiting and has diarrhoea and isn’t severely ill so it’s almost certainly norovirus or similar.

It’ll probably last a couple of days, the diarrhoea will go on for much longer IME.

Hi all, just an update, it was a sickness bug, and spread through the entire family, great grandparents and everything! Which is relief, baby is doing a lot better now and we’re all on the mend, thanks all for the advice and peace of mind! Xxx

Newest update, baby was fine all day today, and all day yesterday, but tonight has thrown up her tea, it’s the first time we’ve given her a whole jar, could we have given her to much to fast or will it just take longer for her to be fully back to her self?

Probably take a little while for her stomach to settle but it can also take a little while for her to get back to 100%
