6yo with 8 days of high temperatures

My 6yo daughter began having a temperature last Wednesday evening- she had the Thursday and Friday off school, was abit up and down, spent some time on the sofa, and was needing regular calpol to keep her temperature at bay, but generally wasn't too bad in herself.Similar happened over the weekend, however each evening her temperature spiked, and on Sunday night hit nearly 40c according to the thermometer. So kept her off school Monday, but she seemed fine all day really and had a doctors appt where they checked her pulse, throat, chest etc which was fine, although they said her glands were up.

Her temperature was abit high again that evening, and in the night, but not too bad Tuesday (yesterday morning) so thought we would attempt school. She managed okay til early afternoon then I got a call asking to collect her as she was feverish again. Her temp came down with calpol again, and last night/this morning was the high side of normal and she seemed OK in herself this morning, so sent her to school and she managed the day fine today apparently- she was okay when I collected her but did look pale, although she was up at 6.30am today so didn't know if that was why.
However by 5pm tonight she was lying on the sofa burning up with a temp of 38.5 again, then fell asleep.

She has also had a nasty cough which seems to be getting worse the last couple of days (the cold outdoor air at the moment probably doesn't help) No runny nose or anything. She has been looking quite pale in the face and dark around her eyes.

She is usually a well and active child, but does sometimes complain of tummy aches and pain in her foot (she is on waiting list for physio)

I'm going to call the docs tomorrow, also try to get a urine sample to take.
Never known anyone to have ever had a temperature go on this long though?!

Calling the docs and getting them to check a urine sample sound like a good plan.

It could be possible that she started with a viral illness and that she has now developed a secondary bacterial infection somewhere - definitely worth ruling out that with the GP.

It could also be a long illness or one virus into another.

It certainly sounds like she needs checking again.

There's been a virus going around here where temps seem to be coming and going, also with a cough. DS was bad with it over the Xmas holidays and a lot of kids at school have been off with the same.
I did take him to the doctors but the said just viral which I assumed, but he was so dizzy he couldn't stand up without being sick. Horrible bug which lasted about 10 days but finally back to normal x

Yes my daughter had high temp for 9 days but she was just under age 2. Ended up very unwell on sepsis pathway on a IV drip, in the end it was RSV and adenovirus, she was very dehydrated and drowsy with poor sats. Hope your dd feels better soon, if she is behaving out of character I would seek help via 111 or GP asap.

We’ve all had it, even in adults it’s causing high temp for at least 5days. No blocked nose but very productive cough causing sore ribs and difficulty sleeping.
I had a cold/chest infection ( possibly Covid but tests all negative) before Xmas so my chest was already a bit congested. This started with DH19 who went out on New Year’s Eve. Although he did spend time with one of his mates who had just returned from skiing so may be an import. Apparently a flu like virus is spreading like wildfire around the ski resorts in Europe.

Thanks everyone- from these responses and the other similar forum posts/medical info I've read, it seems like it could possibly just be a long virus that will run it's course, or might have developed into something more significant that needs further treatment.
Hopefully we will get more clarity tomorrow. It's strange that none of the rest of us have got it :-/
She was quite sweaty and clammy again but her temp is stable at the moment.
Will keep her off school tomorrow, try get a urine sample and get a doctors appt ASAP.

Hi, I was wondering if you knew what the cause was in the end and how long the fever lasted? My daughter has exactly the same symptoms and has had a fever above 38.0 for the last 6 days. She has a cough too but is otherwise okay in herself. thanks
