Hello, I have a 6 month old baby girl. I started her on a little bit of baby rice and purée fruits and vegetables about 3 weeks ago as I felt she was ready before 6 months. She takes an 8 oz bottle in the morning and about 2 hours later il give her some porridge, a bottle another few hours later and then she will have maybe purée sweet potato, carrots and apple or whatever I have made.(just An example. About 2 Tbs worth. Then a bottle again at about 5 and another one at 8 and then she's down for the night.
My question is am I doing this right or should she be in 3 meals by now? She won't drink her bottles fully other than the one first thing in the morning. About 3 oz so I'm scared she's not getting enough milk. Could someone please advise me the best way to feed her with times etc. thank you

She shouldn’t really have baby rice, it’s utter crap.

i think you’re doing well! I started with baby rice and it was absolutely fine for my baby so don’t worry about what a pp has said.
I just went with the flow and followed my baby’s lead. I didn’t move her into 3 meals until she was 8/ almost 9 months as this is when she was weaning off her bottles more and wanting more food.
I was told that my little one needed to have around 400ml of milk a day and anything less would mean vitamin drops, which are fine too. I started giving her yoghurt and milky mash which also counted towards
her milk target for the day.

Baby rice doesn’t have any nutrition so it just fills her up without any good things. So I would try and avoid it.

Babies won’t have 3 meals for a while yet, food at this age is just to get used to it, milk will still be her main source of nutrition until she’s one.

I will say introduce the allergens now, the earlier the better. So things like nuts, shellfish, eggs, wheat, sesame seeds, soy, fish etc. Remember that it’s often not the first or even then second time you introduce an allergen it produces a reaction, so you’ll need to feed them often and keep an eye for any signs. Studies show the earlier allergens are introduced the less chance of allergies as they grow. Good luck!

I just stated in my post that I "started" her on baby rice. That was 3 weeks ago. Now she has porridge. Let's not get too hung up on baby rice that she had for maybe a week 🙈

@Hiddenvoice thanks so much that's a good guide for milk. 😊

The NHS has some good resources, there's a page setting out how much you should aim for them to be eating by age iirc. Obviously babies can have their own ideas! But it's a good starting point.

3 meals is a vague target by 12 months, even then some children might only manage one good meal a day if they are drinking a lot of milk.

What you are said sounds fine, but incorporating some BLW would be more ideal than just fruit and veg puree.

If you are worried about choking- it’s more ‘dangerous’ to wait ages or until teeth are there to give proper solids.

At the moment, baby’s gag reflex is high in the mouth. It moves down as they get older. If your child hasn’t learned how to chew and handle textures at an early age, then they will learn with a much lower gag reflex. Choking more likely.

Remember, gagging is normal. it’s nothing to worry about.

I would begin to offer some buttery toast in the mornings with crusts removed, in addition to what you are doing.

i would also offer some slow cooked, soft chicken or beef. Put breasts in the slow cooker or poach in water until soft. Iron is important and it’s not good for their little tummies to just have fruit and veg.
