Baby’s breathing

Looking for some advice.
My baby is 3 months old. Last week she choked quite badly and while lying down and gasped for air for a few mins ( very scary ) and then came ok again. I did get her seen by an and e doctor and we waited for 7 hours and eventually they sounded her chest said “ yep she’s fine “ and we left.
Anyway… she’s never had any problems with breathing before. But today she was asleep (not lying flat slightly upright in her chair) and was sleeping soundly and I had my back turned to her and she took a big gasp and when I turned around she had woken up and was all startled looking.
this had happened 3 times since she choked last week? She gets a peaceful sleep at night and isn’t a noisy feeder or breather at all Infact sometimes you can’t even hear her breath when she’s in the crib beside you.
does this sound like anything to worry about?

I’ve googled sleep apnea and all different scenarios and it says about noisy breathing and feeding and abkut it being from younger than 3 months?

any advice is good.
thanks in advance

May I add.. when she woke up and gasped it was as if she couldn’t breathe and that’s why she woke up…. I’m a bag of nerves constantly now with it all but can’t figure out why something like this would start at 3 months?

Can you call 111 just to describe what’s happened and ask advice? Or get a dr’s appointment in the morning. Just because of how little she is. Hopefully it’s nothing x

We don’t have 111 we are in Northern Ireland. I’ve messaged health visitor who will reply tomorrow hopefully.

Oh op that must have been so frightening
The exact same thing happened to me with my ds and I was terrified for months and couldn't sleep properly till he was about a year

After happening the first time when he was sleeping in the next2me it then happened another couple of times. I was obviously studying him so much I soon realised it was a mix between silent reflux and his nappy being too tight when he slept. It occasionally happens now at 2yo if he has a waistband in his pj's or trousers. But he has learned how to clear it without choking

Hope this helps xxx

Hello, look at safe sleeping advice from lullaby trust - baby shouldn't sleep in a chair they can lean forward which restricts airways. I'd just keep an eye on it tonight and try a GP tomorrow

Writerz34 · 01/01/2024 17:24

(GP is just for peace of mind, it'll probably all be ok and just one of those things!)

callainblue · 01/01/2024 19:55

First things first make sure you're following safe sleep advice as per lullaby trust. She should be completely flat, on her back in a clear cot on a firm waterproof mattress. The sleeping in a chair on alight incline is enough to occlude her airway and make her gasp for air.

Hiya, my little boy went through something similar at that age, very scary. We went to GP and she diagnosed it as reflux and prescribed Gaviscon (awful stuff, caused really bad constipation).

Obviously that may not be the issue you're having so please go back to your GP if you're still unhappy, I find you really have to be persistent with them to get to the bottom of anything with babies and not get palmed off like I did with the gaviscon.

I hope your little one gets over it soon x

rebecca100 · 01/01/2024 20:06

Just to add to the above, my little boy wears a snuza hero breathing monitor at night and his gasping episodes never triggered it so although terrifying I don't think he did ever completely stop breathing.

Hiddenvoice · 01/01/2024 20:08

That’s really scary so I fully understand why you’re worried.

Id contact your gp in the morning and talk through your worries to get your little one checked over. I echo other posters and would suggest filling sleep safe practices as she could of choked based on being slightly upright.

This sounds very similar to what our DD used to do. She'd be asleep then suddenly act as though she was choking - gasping for breath then would wake up and be fine. It was bizarre and we never got to the bottom of it. She's now 12 months and hasn't done it since she was about four months old.

Get it checked in case it's sleep apnea but for us, it turned out to be nothing to be concerned about...

Hiya, so sorry to hear this has happened, very scary for you! I had the same thing with my LB when he was around that age, he would start to change colour & looked like he was gasping, happened in the car too. Long story short he had bad reflux (other symptoms too) but this improved drastically after weaning. Defo pick it up with your HV/GP and it might be worth getting baby seen by an ENT specialist if you can? It will hopefully be resolved soon, fingers crossed for you xx
