DD is 2 years old. We went to soft play earlier today and she started shivering out of nowhere. I touched her head and she was really hot so we left. I could tell she was quite tired so thought she just needed to rest.

Fast forward to now, she’s had a nap but doesn’t seem herself at all. Hasn’t eaten her dinner and has only had a few sips of water. Ate a few grapes and that was it. I took her temperature twice. It was 38 degrees at 18:45 and then 38.4 degrees at 20:00. I gave her some Calpol and she went to bed.

Her dad is quite concerned. Is this something to worry about or just monitor overnight and see how she is in the morning? Thanks guys

I’m trying not to worry but DD’s temperature is up to 39.6 now. She hasn’t taken any of the antibiotics at all, even if I put it in her juice/water as she just won’t drink anything. If her lack of fluids carries on and she starts to ger drowsy then I can see an A&E trip happening. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that but it’s all quite stressful, especially as she doesn’t talk and can’t say how she feels:(

I have work tomorrow but I’m going to try and do a half day so I can come back to her as soon as possible

You need to try and get the antibiotics in her, even if it means pinning her down to administer. Dd hates having antibiotics and it is very tough love, because she has to take them.

Far better for a few minutes of horribleness at home than having to wait for hours in A&E and then having to do a fluid challenge where you’ll have to syringe apple juice into her mouth every 15 minutes.

Agreed. Antibiotics are horrible and no kid will just let you give it to them. I have to put the syringe between DS’s cheek and teeth whilst pressing his cheeks together. Then I do a quick blow in his face and it startles him enough that he swallows. The blowing in his face is a trick a paediatric nurse taught me.

The antibiotics for throat infections are horrible. The thing is that the alternative might end up being IV antibiotics if you really can't get her to take them orally.

I've no advice really as I'm sure you're trying all the usual things and autism definitely complicated things but solidarity that it's horrible having a sick little one.

If you pin her down for the meds would she vomit them back up?

CeeChynaa · 29/12/2023 09:22

Trust me, I’ve tried everything.

@thaegumathteth if she doesn’t spit it out and somehow manages to swallow it, she will vomit it back up. It’s tough. The GP did say that she’ll most likely get better on her own as he knows how she is with medication. It’s more important to get fluids down her at the very least but we’re at a standstill with that now too. Hopefully today is a better day
