hello ladies
baby has 8 week jabs tomorrow. I am so nervous and no idea what to expect. Lots of people telling me their babies were unsettled for weeks on end and really quite unwell so feeling quite apprehensive about what’s to come.

can anyone help to tell me what I am likely to experience?

If I remember rightly dd2 had quite a high temp ( but she is very prone to these) on the night, think she was pretty much ok after that. You can give paracetamol

IntergalacticP · 27/12/2023 11:32

DS was completely fine after his! I think they tell you to give Calpol after these ones? Can't remember but we did as we were told and he was completely fine.

Practical advice wise I would say don't dress wee one in a onesie/dungarees, better to have a vest and then separates (e.g. jumper and trousers) over the top so you can just pull trousers down for the injections.

Had these a couple of months ago. DS a bit upset straight afterwards, gave Calpol, then he slept for about 3 hours. Was quite unsettled that night and not very hungry. Gave Calpol a few times for the temp. He was back to normal after about 24hours.

Good luck!

You can give Calpol about an hour before the injections.

pponk · 27/12/2023 13:53

yep give calpol before injection. hug them tight and distract afterwards with you being smiley and happy. mine only cried for a few seconds.

started to get temperature a few hours after the jabs and did need to give the full dose of calpol every 6 hours (use ibruprofen for later jabs as it works better)totally back to normal after 32 hrs.

Olika · 27/12/2023 13:55

My DD cried for maybe 20sec afterwards and had fever and she fell asleep really early for the night but that's it. I really wouldn't worry about it.

Mumoftwo1312 · 27/12/2023 13:58

My dd did a weird screaming cry for a few hours that evening after having the jabs, it was alarming but we were expecting some side effects. Also a slightly high temp. But that was it.

She was pretty calm the next day then completely back to normal within two days.

I think it's quite unusual to have side effects that last more than a few days. Try not to worry.

Ohchristmastree23 · 27/12/2023 14:00

If I remember right DS slept a lot afterwards but wasn't ill at all and no fever.

Mumoftwo1312 · 27/12/2023 14:01

Ps one of the jabs, I think 12w or 16w (? I can't remember when they happen any more) made my dd vomit that evening. But that may be because she was crying a bit so I over breastfed her to calm her down and she just overflowed.

But that was really it. She never had more than two days of symptoms.

Xmasiscoming10 · 27/12/2023 18:24

For 8w & 16 week jabs we were told to give calpol just before, then two more doses after because it can prevent the high temp from the men b one.
Dress in a long sleep vest and leggings/joggers probably easiest.
My twins were absolutely fine 24 hours after each set of jabs, bit cranky and sleepy the day of them. They're 9m, so this was fairly recent! Think the jabs bothered me more than them. Big high pitched cry after the injections but settled literally moments later.

Mumaway · 27/12/2023 18:25

Mine both slept really well that night and then we carried on as usual

Winnipeggy · 27/12/2023 18:27

Mine was unsettled for the day, slept fine and didn't have a temp. I know other babies have reacted more but it certainly won't definitely happen to yours. The actual injection is pretty rough but over very quickly. You'll be fine x

calorcalorcalor · 27/12/2023 19:35

Mine cried for about 30 seconds and was a bit tired & dozy in the afternoon but was absolutely fine the next day, please don't worry!

Erlouise · 27/12/2023 22:45

Thanks ladies! I’ve got the calpol at the ready… Dr hasn’t spoken to us about taking beforehand so will probably just wait until I’m there and follow their instruction on that front, but so glad to know that most of your experiences are fairly positive. Really nervous not sure I’ll be able to sleep, definitely bothers us more than the babies lol! But thanks again ladies, fingers crossed all goes okay x

Mine were both fine, I gave calpol 3 times after it regardless of how they were.

blackpanth · 27/12/2023 23:04

If you breastfeed put them on the boob whilst they get them

blackpanth · 27/12/2023 23:05

My son was fine after them

QueenOfWeeds · 27/12/2023 23:08

YY to taking Calpol with you. From our antenatal group (so all jabs within a 6ish week window), some were told to give it before and some (including me) just after. Take a muslin in case they spit it straight back out <looks at DD>.

and YY to a vest and separate joggers. The crying is normally over really quickly. I asked DH to WFH on the day and on the next day in case she had a reaction and we needed to go to hospital, or I wanted reassurance, but I had PND and can see now that this was an overreaction, but it made me feel much better at the time.

Radiodread · 27/12/2023 23:12

Neither of my kids had any noticeable reaction to their routine jabs.

They are being exposed to a bazillion bugs every day, these are just a few more.

calpol if needed but you might not. The surgery will advise you on what to look out for in terms of actually worrisome reactions.

good luck!

Radiodread · 27/12/2023 23:14

And the crying is very short lived because the discomfort of the injection is fleeting. DD cried for about 15 seconds and little chubster DS not at all.

Winnipeggy · 28/12/2023 20:02

How did it go @Erlouise?

Erlouise · 30/12/2023 19:31

Hi ladies! Thanks so much! Surprised my Drs didn’t give me any heads up about calpol. They also booked the 8 week check up straight after the jabs and Dr had to make baby all upset again to check her hips as it meant pushing on her little war wounds!
but anyway! we took the calpol with us and gave first dose as soon as she had the mouth drops, she loved the calpol at first but hated the 2nd and 3rd doses! No fever thank god… just wanted lots of cuddles! got another 2 goes and then it’s all over! God, it’s a lot this mummy lark lol!!
