How often to formula feed?

Four week old baby wakes up crying on 3 hours, on the dot wanting 150ml of milk.

Is this too much? He's 4.5kg I think. Hasn't been weighed for a while.

Babies can't manipulate at this age so if he's drinking it, he must be hungry / needing it.

I'd speak to your health visitor just in case but he could just be a hungry baby?
Our friends was like this where as we struggled to get our baby to drink 2oz X

Completely normal and might be more often if having a growth spurt. Babies take what they need at this age.

I had to check the measurements online as my DD is already 20 months so I cannot remember. It says 120ml for 2-4w old but I would do with what's natural for your baby. Feeding every 3 hours at that age sounds normal to me. And congratulations on your baby and his first Xmas!

Sounds basic but I always do the test of putting my finger to the side of her mouth and if she goes for it, she’s hungry. If she doesn’t, it’s usually just overtiredness.

3 hours is quite a long time to go at that point though, my little girl is 4 months and only just going 3 hours between feeds consistently now. Chances are baby is just hungry. Ignore what it says on the box! They seem to under exaggerate or it’s only the case for babies that aren’t very hungry at all

Sounds fine to me, especially if baby isn't bringing it back up. Some babies are hungrier than others.

Mine was the same and every 3 hours as well.

The formula box states 5 bottles a day. I give my baby 8.... so I'm not sure :/

Do I wash my hands before hand? Or use gloves? How do I overcome over tiredness?

Babies need to feed on demand, signs of hunger before crying are chomping on hand or dummy. Turning head to the side (looking for breast, bottle fed babies do this too) opening and closing mouth & becoming more alert. They will cry as a last resort.

Babies of this age generally don't stay awake long and it's always a good idea to feed play sleep so they don't associate feeding with sleep.

Baby is often asleep.... will wake, cry and show all the hunger signs. He doesn't wake up before crying to show he's hungry.... I don't know what I'm missing.

You're not missing anything, just feed your baby,he won't take it if he doesn't need it, it would be very uncommon at this age to over feed. Try not to worry.

Somuchgoo · 26/12/2023 23:13

At that age intervals between bottles for mine varied from 20m to about 4 hours, most commonly 2-3. I think we usually got through about 10 bottles a day - we made them up, quickly cooled them and stored them in the fridge for 24 hours, so always had then ready to heat and drink within a couple of minutes.

Laneymoo · 26/12/2023 23:35

You're not missing anything! My baby never showed hunger cues, was absolutely fine then screaming her head off until the bottle went in her mouth. She took about 3oz every two hours or so at that age, I think we were on about ten bottles in a 24 hour period.
