Formula and hot water

As per guidelines I'm making formula as I go - fresh water in kettle, boiled, put in bottle. After that I get confused. Do I need to put the formula in the boiling water or when I cool the bottle? Surely really hot water will damage the protein in the milk? The scoop gets a bit damp as well.

The prep machines always have a "hot shot" of water for the formula.

I'm getting the water bottle that rapidly cools the water - is that safe?

Formula should be added to boiling water about 70degrees so no longer than 30 mins after boiling ( special formula might have different rules so double check on the box ) then swirl to mix (shaking can make lots of bubbles that can cause wind). If you're using the Nuby rapid cool or something like that then put 1-2oz of hot water into the bottle (depending on how much you're making) then the formula then add pre-measured cooled water from the Nuby. If you add the full formula to the rapid cool then you have to fully re-sterilise it each time but you don't have to if just adding water.
Hope that helps :)

Boiling water isn't 70 degrees though lol.

Do I wait for the kettle to cool a little and than add the water to the bottle and formula?

It has to be at least 70 degrees. Yes, you can leave it a few minutes to cool but not less than 70 degrees.

The reason for that is that formula powder is not sterile, it can have bacteria and microbes etc in it that need to be killed by the hot water to make it safe.

You have to measure the water first because if you add the powder and then add water up to whichever line you're using, then you won't be putting enough water in.

I always added the formula to the just off boiling water. I also made all bottles up the night before (enough for 24 hours) cooled it as quickly as possible and stored it in the fridge. I did that for all three of mine and never had a problem.

You need the very hot water to ensure that the feed is as sterile as possible, because formula powder itself is not sterile.

Sundayrain · 24/12/2023 20:18

I always poured the boiling water in straight away, added the powder, swirled it to mix then cooled in a big tupperware of cold water and ice packs. I gave up making them all up fresh quite quickly and used to make a days worth ahead, store in the fridge and use within 24 hours. That was the advice until fairly recently and even the NHS advice acknowledges that it's an acceptable method if making up fresh 'isn't possible'!

Scoop thing annoyed me too! Got the on the go formula pots and did all my scooping once a day.

mondaytosunday · 24/12/2023 23:21

As above and then I never heated it up - baby will drink cold milk (and I never heated up baby food either unless it was homemade right before) - saves a lot of aggro if they will take it all at room temperature when out and about.

sleepsuitbag · 24/12/2023 23:32

So I need 2 ounces/60ml to "sterilise" the formula? This is taken from the kettle water, which is fresh from the tap and boiling. The rest of the water can be cooled via the "rapid cool" flask gadget and put back in the baby bottle?

I've not been putting the boiling water to sterilise the formula :(

So I have cooled boiled water in

SparkyBlue · 25/12/2023 00:24

We used to let the water boil then cool for about 20 mins I think then add it to the bottle and add the powder. We used to make up batches at a time so usually for or five bottles and then store them in the fridge

Did you sterilise the plastic formula pots? Did they get wet?

I've got Aldi formula and it's so rubbish how the powder sticks to the spoon and the spoon doesn't have a holder.

@sleepsuitbag no didn't sterilise the pots as the formula would then be going into the hot water

You are boiling water to make the formula safe, not the water.

Not if you look after it correctly. You've been feeding baby milk without hot water..........

My two are still very much alive and fit as fiddles. Perfect prep saved my sanity.

No it doesn't 🤦🏼‍♀️ as long as you change the filter every 3 months, basically use the machine properly

We haver the Tommee Tipper prep machine.
Its brilliant, we make 6 oz. it blasts a shot of boiling water into the bottle to sterilise the bottle, then adds about an oz. of boiling water.
Then it bleeps, and we add the 6 scoops of powder, and swirl it around.
Then back under the machine fir the remaining top up to 6 oz.
Perfect every time.

It won’t if you look after it properly - I’ve used it for my two sons and run a cleaning cycle every week religiously, plus change the filter every three months, and we’ve never had an issue. I actually bought a new one for my second son as the first had been stored and I was worried about mildew in the pipes. So I wouldn’t use second hand. But honestly it’s an absolute life saver!!

shardlakem · 17/05/2024 20:15

Another vote for the prep machine, we have just used ours for just over a year, cleaned it regularly with new filters and never had any issues. It really was a life saver especially at night time.

Sunshinedaytoday · 17/05/2024 20:19

I'm confused op by what you think you're not doing right.

You could do your own version of a perfect prep, do 3oz of boiling and top up with cooled water

Or use the rapid cool thing , never had one.

Or just make it advance and rapidly cool.
