Four week old hasn't pooed

I have a four week old and his bowel movements have slowed down - we are now on day two of no poo. Formula feed. What do I do? He used to poo several times a day.

If he's happy enough, no tummy ache etc then you don't necessarily need to do anything. If he's uncomfortable with it you can try offering ready made formula feeds (i.e. the liquid stuff in cartons) for a few feeds. It's easier for little tummies to digest and hopefully will get things moving! Also a gentle massage and warm bath might help.

Breastfed babies tend to poop more than formula ime. Changing feeding can cause their digestive system to change too so it may just be his system getting used to the new milk. Any signs of pain?

I have changed from Actimel to cheap Aldi milk. Also I did relay on those bottles a lot in the start. Could the formula be an issue?

DS1 didn't poo for a week quite regularly. He was fine. Just expect a huge poonami at some point.

GreenMeeple · 24/12/2023 12:05

My breastfed DS used to only poo once a week/ ten days for the first three months of his life.

As long as he seems happy, eats well, has plenty of wet diapers and the poo is not hard when he does poo it should be fine.

Keep an eye on it because my Little one has dairy intolerance and he had pain from dairy but got constipation alot. Keep an eye on how he is after each feed and contact GP if he seems to be in pain after a bottle

Gently cycle his legs?

Ostryga · 24/12/2023 12:27

Formula fed babies should be pooing more often than bf babies as there’s more waste in formula.

4 days without a poo is constipation, usually due to formula and their little systems not being able to digest is properly just yet. I would call 111 to see if they have an ooh appointment.

My formula babies were both infrequent poopers - it's normal and they are both fine! If he's not in any pain or discomfort then he's probably just got a slow digestive system. We used to know the poos were coming due to the rancid farts!

Breastfed babies poo frequently because there's so little in breast milk that their bodies don't use so it basically goes straight through them. Formula is a little more difficult to digest.

If he's well in himself and having regular wet nappies and eating well, I wouldn't worry too much about it, a poo will come. You can always give your GP or HV a call.
