Anxiety over sleep bag

Little one is four weeks on Monday and it's his first time in a sleep bag.

He's kicking off the blankets and was moving to the head of his Moses basket.

He's now in a "next to me crib" and in a different room in the house. The house is quite cold, and currently it's reading about 19 degrees on the thermometer.

Baby has a 2.5 tog sleep bag, short sleeved vest and a baby grow with no hands or feet (he's in between sizes).

I've had a search on the internet and it seems that the baby shouldn't be wearing that much? Just a long sleeved vest?

Also does it look ok? Doesn't seem too loose around the neck.... sorry I'm a FTM and anxious!

The baby's should be sleeping in the same room as you until at least 6 months preferably. Do you mean you're all sleeping in a different room to the one you were in? Or a different room to you?

My baby is 12 weeks old today and in a 2.5 tog sleeping bag. She's wearing a short sleeved vest and a baby grow. I've turned the cuffs over her hands as her hands are getting freezing at night but she's nice and warm in her sleeping bag. Our bedroom is about 20/21 degrees at night.

I'd def put him in a baby grow with hands and feet though and in the same room as you.

He is super cute!

Hey, hopefully this helps a little, I rely on it 😊.

Which suggests he's wearing too much :/

The thing is, 18 degrees in summer v winter at night feels different?

Same room as me, we just had to swap rooms and this is our new room.

@sleepsuitbag I know exactly what you mean, our room is set to 19c at night and can feel a slight chill. My 8 month old boy wears a long sleeved vest, sleepsuit and a 2.5 tog bag x

If it was summer I wouldn't dress baby in as much.....

My baby was a newborn last winter, we kept our room about 19 and he wore a 2.5tog sleeping bag, a short sleeve vest and a babygrow with the mitten bits turned over. He's 1 now and wearing the same thing.

Check the back of his neck to see how warm he feels but I think that's the right thing for them to be wearing

afinethingindeed · 24/12/2023 05:59

My 10 week old is wearing a short sleeved vest, baby grow and 2.5tog sleeping bag. Our room is between 20-21.5 degrees, usually at the higher end to be honest.
I used to have her in less, per the guidelines, but she was waking up cold so here we are.

With regards to loose necks, the sleeping bag my DD wears was probably a bit too loose to begin with but because of the way the arm holes are, the bag could not possibly ride up over her face.

riotlady · 24/12/2023 06:00

Sounds fine to me, I tend to go with short sleeve vest + sleepsuit for all of winter. Feel his chest with your fingers, is it a normal temp? Probably fine.

I think there’s a lot of messaging about not letting your baby get too hot which is quite anxiety provoking, but I think it’s more geared at people who are layering their babies up with a million blankets and a hat indoors at 20 degrees, not the difference between a short sleeve vest and a long sleeve one or 18 vs 19 degrees on the thermostat.

SErunner · 24/12/2023 06:40

I've always found the guides way underestimate what they need. Our 2 year old is in a short vest, pyjamas and a 3.5 tog bag. I'd suggest a long sleeve vest at least for yours.

Hey, hopefully this helps a little, I rely on it 😊.

I stuck to this religiously.

It is better they are a little cold than overheat.

Make sure head cant get down the gap at the top and you are good

I feel terrible as baby was cold the other morning :( moved the crib away from the window so hope that also helped

I'd say a long sleeve vest, and I put socks on my babies hands (he pulls mits off) as they're like ice if I don't which I would find uncomfortable so assume the baby does, but if your babys are warm then probably doesnt need them. As pp said above that's a good rule of thumb the clothing graph.

SnowSnow · 24/12/2023 22:10

Our baby is 11weeks and generally our room is about 18c. He wears a long sleeved vest and sleep suit with a sleeveless 2.5 tog sleeping bag and often his cheeks and hands feel chilly in the night so I turn on a little radiator in our room. I have seen guidance somewhere that says to wear certain clothes but adjust to your child depending on if they feel hot or cold.

dementedpixie · 24/12/2023 22:11

@sleepsuitbag does the temperature drop lower in the night? You would need the extra clothing if it gets colder overnight than it is at the start of the night

Padget · 24/12/2023 22:16

Whilst I agree too cold is better than too warm - I did find that mine were happier on the snug side. If you’re constantly checking on them, as you should be at that age, then you’ll soon know if they’re too hot. But they do sleep better when they’re snug; and that goes on as they get older

modgepodge · 24/12/2023 22:36

I definitely found mine needed more clothing than the charts suggested. It IS better that they are cold, than too hot, as cold babies wake up and cry, and hot babies don’t, it’s just dangerous. BUT if they are waking up crying cos of the cold (which mine was), one extra layer won’t make them overheat. Piles of blankets and hats and things will.

Dont use baby’s hand temperature as a gauge btw, they’re always cold, feel down their back or chest. If that feels warm but not sweaty they’re fine.

I'm so anxious about the "sweaty" method. My relative freaks out if the baby feels warm, but surely it's just "sweaty" we need to be concerned about!

Mine (3 months) is in 2.5tog bag, long sleeve vest and Sleepsuit at the moment. Our room is generally quite cold though (although not particularly today). The above guide is a good starting point though and you can decide if they are too cold or too warm from there as all babies are different.

I never fully understand when the guidance is that they should wear one extra layer during the day but here I am myself with a thick quilt and PJs and the recommendation for baby is for a thin bag and a single layer.

Mine was big at birth so has been in a sleep suit from day one. Just make sure they are above the weight range and they are very safe.

How you dress your baby is none of your relatives business.

Tell them that.

LusaBatoosa · 25/12/2023 00:39

My baby is 6 months old and we don’t even own a 2.5 tog sleep sack. We have a few one tog ones, but don’t really use them.

Room is generally around 21 degrees and he sleeps in a sleep suit with a short sleeved vest underneath it. That’s it. If I’m feeling chilly, I’ll put socks and a long sleeved vest on him.

I spent the first few weeks after he was born absolutely terrified about getting the temperature wrong, so you have my sympathies.

LusaBatoosa · 25/12/2023 00:45

I found these helpful, at the time. Maybe they’ll help you. Merry Christmas!
