Toddler thirstier than usual- when to worry?

My 17 month old has been thirstier than usual for the last few days. She’s had a bit of a bug and is possibly teething so probably connected than those things. Of course Googling turns up worst case scenarios like diabetes. At what point would you worry and seek medical attention? Our GP wouldn’t be open until Tuesday anyway so would have to call 111.

If she's not losing weight I wouldn't worry. A family member recently got diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and the weight loas before diagnosis was significant. You'd definitely have noticed other symptoms by now if it was Type 1.

Can you give us an idea of how much she is drinking? A bit thirstier than usual wouldn't worry me.

I wouldn’t jump to diabetes unless she’s losing weight and/or having infections. Certainly not something that needs seeing to immediately

Thanks all for the reassurance! I’m not sure exactly how much she is drinking - maybe I’ll try to measure it. I just noticed it is more than usual and she was thirsty during the night last night and wanted more water even after having some milk. There was also an odd incident at nursery a few days ago when she drank 4 cups of water and then vomited but it could have been part of the most recent virus.

I haven’t weighed her recently but will check. Wouldn’t surprise me if she wasn’t gaining much as we have had back to back nursery illnesses over the last few months, a lot of which have affected her appetite.

Could she have an irritated throat? Have you tried her with an ice lolly or some jelly and icecream?

My little one is always seems to be more thirsty when she’s sick.

I know this was ages ago but the exact same situation has happened to my child and I'm really anxious. Was yours all okay in the end? X

This happened to my son last year, he was nearly 6. It happened off the back of having a short bout of diarrhoea but the excessive thirst lasted about a month. He was drinking around 7 of those tall ion8 bottles if water a day. I was convinced he d got diabetes, I had him tested twice. He didn't have it and then he just stopped doing it
