Ditching the dummy at 18mo

18mo DS is obsessed with his dummy. Doesn’t have it in the day, except for naps at home - doesn’t have it for naps at nursery 4 days a week. However as soon as he gets home from nursery, sees it on the side/starts shouting and pointing at where they are kept - he is obsessed with having it and won’t fall asleep without it.
He us recently started to regress in his sleeping and I suspect due to teething, it’s back to the newborn days of going in and replacing his dummy as he chucks it through the slats of his cot.
He’s a big, physically capable and larger toddler and already has 16 teeth with his second molars coming in we think. He is quite tantrummy and throws which I know is developmental, but makes the dummy-ditching feel more daunting.

How the hell do we ditch the dummy? Now is the right time, as he’s getting more obsessed with it as he gets older. I can’t bear the thought of letting him cry it out. When I was 2.5yo I gave my dummy to Father Christmas apparently - but he doesn’t have the reasoning to understand that.
Any tips or tricks for any toddler of this age, who is dummy obsessed at night and is likely to kick up a fuss when we get rid of it? I know I need to do it sooner rather than later but would like to hear your stories of how you managed it.
