Hello,
Has anyone any idea what this rash could be. 12yo daughter. Feels well no temp or anything. It came around 2 weeks ago, faded not completely, but came back with a vengeance yest. Bit confused as it's only on the legs. I checked for bed bugs but all is clear. Googled it but they all look the same. TIA. 😊

Oohh. I have no idea. I would take her to a pharmacist.

I’ll raise my hand and offer you Henoch Schönlein Purpura as an opinion. You can check it out on the NHS website. If it is, you may need to take her to A&E as HSP can cause potential bowel and kidney damage. Has your DD recently had an upper respiratory tract infection or some other virus?

Of course, you may have changed your washing detergent and her school tights or socks are causing irritation!

Snugglewuggle25 · 21/12/2023 17:05

Thankyou for your replies. I took her to doctor and she told me to go straight to A&E as the rash doesn't "disappear under the glass". Currently sat waiting. Will update for anyone in the future.

@Snugglewuggle25 please try not to worry, you were me nine months ago when I raced to school to collect my DD1(16) because the school nurse was concerned about the possibility of meningitis due to a non-blanching rash that was spreading up her legs. DD1 was triaged through A&E very quickly and we were fortunate to see a paediatric consultant who explained that if it were meningitis, my DD would be extremely poorly indeed, which she wasn’t - just a bit under the weather with a sore throat and aches and pains and generally feeling rough. The paediatrician diagnosed Henoch Schönlein Purpura (HSP) which is a type of vasculitis and the rash is actually the blood vessels bursting under the skin. HSP can be triggered by a virus or indeed nothing.

As soon as I saw your photo, I recognised the rash. I will try to upload some images of the progress of my DD’s ‘spots’. Please do come back to me if it is HSP, as I can give you a download on how it has played out for my DD.

A few ‘before’ pictures and one taken in A&E as the rash developed.

It all sounds very stressful. I’m wishing you both well.

Thankyou so much!! Yes it's been confirmed as HSP. I have actually never heard of it before today. We're still at the hospital waiting on results, and for the doctor to decide whether to keep her in or let her go home. NHS staff are amazing. ❤️. Would appreciate if you have any more info on this. Thankyou again

I was just going to write HSP my son had this as a child, we were a Few years at GOSH every month and he was on antibiotics for two years. It has scarred his kidneys but his was the most severe. X

Copperoliverbear · 22/12/2023 01:18

The rash usually goes within a few weeks, but the after effects can last a few months, such as tiredness, and aches and pain. Give her paracetamol not ibuprofen as this can affect the kidneys too.
You may also be asked to attend the hospital for regular check ups for six to 12 months afterwards. X

Snugglewuggle25 · 22/12/2023 01:44

Thank you all. We are now home 🏡. It has been confirmed as HSP, she has to have her urine dipped every morning for a month to check for protein, and weekly community nurse to check blood pressure and urine. And will need a check up with consultant after few months. Wow its amazing how the human body works. Thankyou all once again. I love mumsnet. ❤️

@Snugglewuggle25 glad you’re home and hopefully you’re managing a lie-in after your late night hospital adventure? I will return to the thread later to update you on my DD’s HSP journey.
