I'm at my wits end with his behaviour, I know I'm managing it wrong but I don't know what to do. My boy can be so lovely but every night when he comes home from school he goes into this really naughty stage, he'll break things, hit and nothing works to avoid a meltdown. It's like he deliberately pushes me, mostly I keep my temper and let it play out but sometimes it pushes me until I shout at him, then I feel awful but I can't cope with it. No punishment, talks, cuddles seem to help, what can I do?

The transition between school and home seem to be an issue.

Can you go to the park or a coffee shop so he can unwind from the school day? Or maybe try a grandparent picking him up?

Can you maybe try explaining to him in the way home what the expectations are?

We are going home now, would you like to play a game or watch TV for a bit?

Would you like juice or hot chocolate?

focus on one thing at a time.

Have you tried rewards for good behaviour? Remind him on the way home that if he's good and does good listening throughout the week, he'll get something on Friday (pokemon cards / sweets / toy whatever that motivates him).
Keep reminding him for the first few weeks. As soon as he hits, that's it, he doesn't get his Friday treat. When he's doing well, get excited with him and remind him to keep up the good behaviour.

Thank you, his grandad picks him up now and he's fine for about an hour when he gets home. He has a snack and a play but then seems to get into a really hyperactive stage, maybe he does need to get out of the house and do an activity to burn off some energy x

I will try this, my DH wants to give pocket money for this reason. I also know I'm being inconsistent with following through 🤦

Sounds like he’s been cooped up at school and when he gets home he needs to release some energy. Dd can be like this.

Can you get him into a sports club of some kind? Karate, football etc a couple of days after school. And the other ones get outside for a run about, even if only for 20 mins.

Someone once said you need to run boys like you do a spaniel 😂 all that pent up energy needs to go somewhere and if it’s not into exercise etc it turns into big emotions.

I have this problem with my eldest. I find walking back from school helps then having a snack before tea. Or going to after school activity or some sort of exercise where he can burn of steam and calm down.

Go to the park straight after school for half an hour ... Let him get the day out of his system with no extra demands placed on him. See if that helps.
