Anyone awake? my 10 month old is vomiting

Hi sorry I probably am overthinking but my 10month old has vomited 3 times in her sleep now in the last hour or so and I don't quite know what to do?

She's never done this before and I'm just wondering what I need to look out for. I think it's just an upset stomach - I noticed she wasn't eating in the same way today. At that age should I worry about her choking on vomit? Should I sleep in her room? I gave her the tiniest bit of water but I think that's come up since.

Second time once she vomited she was happy enough smiling and laughing- so I'm thinking it's not serious?

FTM and no idea what I'm doing Confused

It'll likely be a stomach bug. With my dc I used to put them in bed next to me with a towel under them and not sleep basically. It will pass.

Thank you 🙏🏻

I wonder should I do that now - wake her and move her in to my bed or just see how it goes first and do it if she wakes again?
We have never Co slept before so I'd be terrified of her falling out 😬

In the same boat right now, my 13 month old woke me up being sick. They’ve fallen back to sleep and been sick again.
I’m sitting on the couch with towels all round while they sleep in my arms.

Yes, choking on vomit is a real risk at any and every age. At this time of night, this is what you need to be most alert to.

Bring her into your bed, sleep with her next to you, you won’t be able to sleep through her puking. As soon as she starts, turn her into her side at the very least.

Does she have a raised temperature?

If not, she can go without food and drink until the morning. Let her sleep, and see how she is first thing.

If she has a temperature, depending on how high it is, call your emergency health line number (is it 111? I’m not in the UK). I do temps in Fahrenheit, so I’d say if it’s below 103F I would wait till around 6/7am before assessing her again. If it’s 103 or above, call 111.

Good luck.

So scary seeing it for the first time and I know it's the first of many no doubt! Hope your little one feels better soon and you get some rest yourself 🙏🏻

Thank you. No raised temp at the moment but I'll keep checking that.

I have a single sofa bed in her room beside her cot so I've just moved in here and I will be beside her all night so let's hope that was the end of it for tonight - praying so!

Yes you in with her is best as she is safe in her cot and you are literally right next to her
Dont give any water for the rest of the night
She will be ok with no fluids till Morning

pinklepea · 21/12/2023 02:13

@laladoodoo FTM and you don't know what to do, but you do. Your in the room on sofa keeping her safe. No one told you to do that, your mum instincts are good. And it's never overreacting. You love your baby and your job is to protect them any way you can. This is why it's exhausting being a mum because you love someone more than yourself

Islandermummy · 21/12/2023 02:27

Great that you're in with her, can't think of much else you can do except check her temp periodically. I agree bed-sharing could result in her falling out if she's not used to it (mine deffo would roll out!).

Hope you both get some sleep. I think vomming incidents often pass quite quickly, so hope she feels better really soon.

Porridgeislife · 21/12/2023 02:29

You’re doing everything I would do so I think you’re on the right track. It’s such a strange sound when they properly vomit for the first time rather than reflux.

If she’s still vomiting in the morning, get some rehydration sachets (basic Galpharm ones are available at most supermarkets) and a Calpol syringe. Give her 5ml every 10 minutes - the biggest risk to her is dehydration so keeping her ahead of that will help her recover faster.

laladoodoo · 21/12/2023 07:57

Thank you so much everyone!

She didn't vomit rest of the night but she's just woken and she wretched and got upset.

I'm now wondering if I should attempt milk or any breakfast? I think I'm gonna go to the pharmacy to ask for rehydration sachets?

Glad she was ok through the night, though I expect you didn’t sleep much. I would just try her with a little water this morning. I know my advice is old school 🥰, but that’s what I would have done with mine , a little water and if that stays down some apple purée

hskdnek572 · 21/12/2023 08:15

What did she have for dinner? Mine did this every time she had salmon for dinner until I realised the connection.

anonqrtb · 21/12/2023 08:22

Mine had a tummy bug when she was like 6 months it was awful.

We called 111 (as it was like 1am whens he started being sick) and they advised to offer water as often as she'd like, then offer 2oz of milk every 2 hours until she had kept it down. This was before weaning, so i guess adult rules applie if weaned in offering plain foods like toast etc.

They advised to keep a tally of wet/pooey nappies and if she hadnt had a wee in 6 hours then to call back and they will bring her in.

Basically - keep offerring her fluids, and keep checking her hydrationlevels. There isnt much else you can do apart from give lots of cuddles! Hopefully she feels better soon, luckily these things tend to go as quickly as they came! x

laladoodoo · 21/12/2023 09:49

Thank you so much to everyone for your helpful advice!
Honestly sometimes I don't know where I would be without forums like this in the middle of the night!
So far so good - I've been able to get a bit of liquid in and no further vomiting just yet. The first bug of many no doubt!

If you are still breastfeeding just feed when she seems interested. Otherwise regular very small amounts of water.
