Tips for 8 month old first plane journey

I’ll be taking my 8 month old on holiday for the first time over Christmas. 2 hour plane journey. He is formula fed. I’m planning to take 4 bottles and ready to feeds for the plane journey and airport, a sling to use in the airport and on the plane if he gets fussy. Maybe one or two small toys to keep him entertained? Then the usual changing bag stuff - nappies, spare clothes.

anything else I should take for the plane? Or tips to help the journey?

also, our hotel is providing a cot. Should I check if they have a bassinet insert? Or is this standard? Most of the travel cots I’ve seen place baby pretty much on the floor and that just would kill my back! Baby isn’t sitting up independently yet

Are they providing a standard cot or a travel cot? If it’s a standard cot check that it meets safety standards. If it’s a travel cot, go to the bookshelf in the hotel and borrow some books to make the travel cot higher.

Spare clothes for you in hand luggage.
You seem to have thought about most other things.

Is he not going to be too big /mobile for the bassinet?? I know you said not sitting, but if he can roll, use the full cot.

Don’t forget the spare clothes (for everyone) in case of unexpected vomit or poo explosion. We’ve stayed in several hotels with our baby and it’s mostly been standard travel cots without the bassinet setting and quite hard mattresses (but she has mostly slept OK in them).

silly question but how do you manage with the standard cots where baby is on the floor? He’s waking up every hour at the moment and I’m not sure my back will take that much constant bending down! Our cot at home is set a bit higher off the ground. Or is just a case of either raising the cot or putting up with it?

And any ideas on toys that we can easily play with on the plane and put in the changing bag? Good tip about the extra clothes!

We just put up with the travel cot but luckily DD was sleeping quite well all the times we travelled with her. Wouldn’t have been so keen if she was waking hourly as I also have a bad back. Other option is to take a higher travel cot as one if your baby items.

Toys - it depends on what he likes. Maybe a sensory toy if he’s not too old for it, interactive book, favourite soft toy? stacking cups can be good to take away as they don’t take up much space and can also be used in the bath but maybe not for the plane as you will drop them. 2 hrs is pretty short so wouldn’t worry too much about toys.
