4 month old daytime naps

Hey,

Is there a way to extend daytime naps? My DD was never a great daytime sleeper as a newborn but always slept well at night. She is now 16weeks and I've managed to get her taking regular daytime naps but she will never sleep any longer than 40 minutes but she still seems tired when she wakes and gets really cranky, I've tried settling her back to sleep but it never works. She gets tired after about an hour/hour and a half of being awake so she's taking 5 40 minute naps a day. Is this normal at her age or is there a way I can get her napping less but for longer periods?

I occasionally had success with them napping in a sling. Would sleep longer snuggled up and warm against you. I'd sit down on the sofa once they were asleep and then if they started stirring would get up and walk around until they dropped off again.

Could maybe do similar with the pram /pushchair (Rock them back to sleep or use a rockit?)

Another thing to try is white noise. It covers over sudden noises from birds/planes/deliveries and seems to help lengthen the nap.

This is normal. 40 min is one sleep cycle and many babies can't link them together at that age. Mine was 9 months before he started taking longer naps

That’s good to know. What did you do about wake windows?

Keep to age-appropriate wake windows as much as you can. In theory they'll be tired enough to occasionally sleep longer ( not that that EVER happened to me!)
