How to dress 4month old for cold weather

Hey, I know it may sound silly but I constantly worry about what to dress my baby in so that she isn't too hot or too cold. I have a carrier which I love using for going out for walks but now the weather has turned really cold I don't have a clue what to dress her in and some days we won't even leave the house (currently on day 4 of staying in and I'm desperate for fresh air). I know the carrier counts as a layer and my body heat counts as a layer so would she be ok in her normal indoor clothing (long sleeve vest, long sleeve top, leggings/trousers and socks) plus hat and mittens for outside? Would she need an extra pair of bottoms so her legs don't get cold?
Also what about the car seat, again she wears her indoor clothing plus hat and blanket, but she always kicks the blanket off and it ends up on the floor so I won't put it back on her. When I try and put a cardigan on her as well she kicks off maybe coz she's uncomfortable.

Thank you.

No idea on the carrier sorry but I'd give one of these car seat blankets a try for the car.

At this time of year when I used to take DD out in the carrier I used to put her on her normal clothes with a pram suit on over the top and a hat. She always seemed comfortable x

@Jenks1111 what do you mean by really cold? What temp is it outside during the day where you are?

What I found useful was to get a zip in panel for one of my coats to have babe under my coat and sharing body heat with me.
If you're using a pram suit it should be extra long in the legs so that babe still has space to get the M shape legs in the carrier x

A useful article the advice is no pram suits when in a carrier

Some days are 5dc, so I would be wearing at least 3 layers including coat

Ah okay so not really super cold or freezing, in that case I'd just do normal inside clothes with a fleece overall - as a poster above said, one with long legs so the material doesn't ride up or (if with foldover feet) bunch the toes up when the baby is in the carrier (with M position legs).

Get one of these. They are brilliant. Keeps baby dry when raining too.

If it's cold like single digits, I would do vest, top/baby grow, jumper and double up on socks with the blanket above on top. And a hat.

Oh I'd completely forgotten about the winter carrier covers!
Absolutely get one of these! I'd literally just pop my little one in his indoor clothes in the carrier, a cover like the one above on top and that was that. Can't believe I forgot about it!!

My LO is 5 months and in a carrier where I don’t want to wear a heavy coat baby will be in indoor clothing with a hat and I’ll either use a clip over attachment (the same Bebear one a poster a has linked above). Great for popping on and off or you can get little leg warmers which are handy. They can be popped on and off each leg easily so keeps them warm but doesn’t add an additional layer inside the carrier itself.

if I’m wearing a coat I’ll use my one with a zip in insert (from Seraphine)

I found a pram suit a bit too warm and restrictive in a carrier so prefer layers now.

LittleBearPad · 17/12/2023 10:05

Please don’t stay inside because you’re worrying about what to put your baby in. Put them in a pram suit and crack on.

DD wears her inside clothes - long sleeved vest and long sleeved top, tights and trousers with a hat and mittens (she'll often remove the mitten though and just keep her arms under my arms lol). Then I put her in the carrier with my big winter coat over the top. If it's really cold I'd put a jumper on her aswell. She always seems warm enough.

You could take her out for a short walk and see how you/she feels? Maybe walk to a local cafe and take a spare layer with you and you can add it when you get there if needed.

She's not going to be dangerously cold if she's in clothes and in a carrier and on you under your coat.

I liked a fleece suit for cold days - good for carrier and car seat. Jo Jo do nice ones and you can always pick them up on vi ted.
