What age did you forward face?

I'm just curious to see when people started to forward face their children?

I see a lot of posts on 'mum groups' about how they'll basically keep their kid rear facing until they're 26, but virtually everyone I know has forward faced at about 2

For reference, my eldest is 3.5 and still rear facing. Youngest is 9m and will be for as long as I can too.
Eldest is 50th centile so car seat weights etc not really been an issue
Youngest is 99th centile so we'll see!

Just curious to see what the general population does :)

If it makes anyone feel better, the car seat in DHs car is a death trap. It would actually be safer not to have a car seat at all. DS is out of it, all over the place. I’ve no idea what to do about it. DH refuses to buy another and I can’t afford it. So forward facing sort of pales into insignificance!

You transfer your car seat into his car every journey, you find the money or you don't let your dc travel with him.
Why on earth would that make anyone feel better, and why on earth are you not rectifying it?

Christabelladaisy · 27/12/2023 10:47

So how do I stop him travelling with him if/when I’m not around?

And how do I find several hundred pounds for a car seat?

I don’t mean those to be provocative questions in any way. I genuinely try not to let ds travel in it when I can but it just isn’t always possible.

You don't need several hundred pounds. I bought a Joie stages for £80 last week from boots. I can't fathom a safe car seat not being a priority, and a DH who didn't keep my kids safe would be an ex tbh. You can't have a toddler loose in a car, that's bonkers, so unsafe and illegal.

Christabelladaisy · 27/12/2023 10:55

I have thought about it but if I was to make him an ex, it would mean he’d spend more time in a dangerous car seat, not less. So that’s not the answer - at least not for several years.

How old is he? A safe, cheaper forward facing car seat if he's older than 15 months is surely better than what he currently has over a more expensive rear facing car seat.

You could also look into klarna or paypal and see if you can get the more expensive rear facing car seat through that? The payments would be more manageable.

Joie Bold is currently £150 at Mamas & Papas. They do klarna so you could pay in 3 payments of £50 if that could be managed?

There's also the Joie Steadi which is currently £110.50. Klarna is still an option.

Joie Every Stage is £150 too. Again with Klarna as an option.

Hopefully one of those will be appropriate for your son.

Thanks, I’m looking into those but the problem is I have no current source of income (mat leave) so it’s difficult. When I return to work I’ll get one definitely.

AnotherEmma · 27/12/2023 11:06

@Christabelladaisy
it's worrying that you don't have access to any money other than maternity pay; your husband's income should be family money.
how many children do you have and how old are they?
Do the two of you disagree about other important things? Is he generally difficult?

Why is your husband keeping all of the money to himself, especially if you currently have no income? Why is he refusing to buy a car seat for his own child?

What an arsehole.

We do have a joint account but can’t really buy a ‘big’ item without prior discussion/agreement.

He sounds like a horror and genuinely he isn’t but doesn’t have a clue about car seats etc, and thinks I’m being neurotic. I’m just trying to keep him from travelling with ds but it is not always possible. However it isn’t very frequent.

NameChange30 · 27/12/2023 11:13

How old is your son and which car seat is it?
I'm just wondering if there might be a way to make the seat itself more secure.

Please could anyone with an ERF seat share recommendations? Leaning towards Axkid- but not sure which one?

DD1 is just over 3 and would have stayed rear-facing in her current seat until 4 but I need to move DD2 in to it soon as she is outgrowing her infant carrier.

Avionaut Sky 2.0 is lovely, they do the sky q as well which is slightly cheaper as comes without the newborn inserts x

This is about your son's safety. Tell him you are buying the car seat and do it.

If he doesn't have a clue, he needs to accept your judgement when it comes to car seats and I'd be telling him this too.

One time in the car seat you described is one time too many.

If he won't let you buy something as basic as a safe car seat, then truly, he is a horror.A "D"H would never control finances, endanger your child and belittle you like that.

I’ll have a look - out with children at the moment in my car Smile
