Infant gaviscon or comfort milk?

GP has prescribed gaviscon for DD reflux (they were very reluctant as she’s not losing weight as far as we know), but I’m debating whether to try comfort milk first as I’ve heard the gaviscon constipates and rarely works. Does anyone have any experience?

I think as the GP has prescribed it, I would try that first then at least you can tell the GP that you followed their advice Wink

Gaviscon is evil stuff! You can try it if you want to but the constipation is far worse than the reflux.

How old is baby? Sometimes when v tiny their guts just aren’t used to digesting and the feeling makes them uncomfortable. It there isn’t anything actually wrong, they just need to get a bit older.

I was always told by midwives/health visitors that comfort milk isn't any good and is a waste of money!

My daughter was breastfeed and did really well on gaviscon and high dose omperazole. We were on and off gaviscon for 8 weeks trying to find the minimum amount to help without causing constipation but in the end the benefit outweighed the risk and she had lactulose to soften her stools.
She has particularly stubborn reflux and needed domperidone added too. She's still on this combination at 3 but hasn't needed the lactulose since she was 7-8 months

Comfort milk is more liquidy than regular formula. You can try it (you'll probably try everything before you hit on the solution for your baby, it's such a minefield) but we found anti-reflux milk was more effective at staying down.

Well, at least, it worked for us for a week until it turned out that keeping the formula down was worse for DS because he actually had CMPA and needed CMPA formula mixed with Carobel until he got his undiagnosed tongue tie cut at 7 months of age, then we were able to combi-feed because latching stopped feeling like razor blades.

If only the doctor had actually believed me that there was a problem in the first place instead of telling me I was just being an over-anxious first time mother this wouldn't have taken months to resolve. 🙄

Gaviscon gave my DD constipation and omaprazol didn't help much either.

She is mostly breastfed but we did find anti reflux milk helped a lot when FF. Loved the idea of Kendamil but in reality it was awful for her, I think because of the dairy. We had success with Hipp.

It could also be a dairy or soya intolerance? My friend cut dairy (she was EBF) and her son's reflux stopped immediately.

My LO is 5 months and we had an absolute nightmare until a month ago.

BF for a month but then discovered tongue tie and even the procedure didn’t help so had to switch to FF because of weight loss.

He had awful reflux so tried aptamil anti reflux for a month which did the job but it would go straight through. Tried comfort milk which just turned his poo green and did nothing. HV said comfort milk was a bit of a gimmick. Hipp made reflux worse. Tried lactose free which showed some improvement…

The same as you….because he was gaining weight the GP wasn’t that interested.
Suspected CMPA so we got a prescription for aptamil pepti 1 which was awful and he refused to drink and made his reflux so much worse! I don’t think it is a cows milk allergy he’s just a bit sensitive to it.

Final try was Nannycare first infant formula goats milk. He’s absolutely thriving on it. It’s full fat and creamy and the make up is slightly different to cows milk and it’s easier to digest. It’s lovely stuff and no more projectile vomiting

He was still a little bit sicky, small amount and very acidic so I quite firmly asked for Gaviscon….he started off on the full dose of 2 sachets a bottle and it constipated him terribly so I halved it to 1 sachet a bottle and it works just as well and he has 2 dirty nappies in 24 hours. Just have a play with the dose to find the balance.

honestly wouldn’t bother with comfort milk o tried a few and they were worse if anything for reflux.
