4 week old only drinking 2oz

DD is only having 2oz in her bottles recently. Some of her bottles she’ll drink the 4oz but majority of the time she’s only drinking about 2oz before she falls asleep! I’ve tried everything and nothing seems to be working. Is drinking 2oz normal?

My DD is just over 3 weeks and sometimes only drinks 2ozs. Their stomachs are still small at this age. Is she gaining weight and having plenty of wet and dirty nappies? X

@Tryingtoconceivenumber2 thanks for your reply!
she’s having plenty of wet and dirty nappies and last time she was weighed she was putting on weight (about a week ago), I might take her to the clinic this week and make sure! X

2oz is 60ml. Babies only really need 40-60ml every couple of hours until around 8wk & then more like 3oz at 3 months. Their stomachs are tiny. If you feed more their stomach will stretch. Make sure to pace feed otherwise they'll still feel hungry as they'll drink too quick

Mine was only having 5oz for most bottles (occasionally 6oz) at 6 months before starting solids.

Why is mine wanting 90 - 110ml a feed and only 18 days old?

Baby also lost more than 8% weight at the first weigh in.

I'm guessing deeds are not pace fed. Each feed should take around 15min, stopping to wind a couple times. It's reflux for them to suckle, even if full. They also suck for comfort.

At 18 days Their stomach is only around 50-60ml. 90ml is stretching their tummy.

They can vary quite a bit. Mine only wanted small feeds of 2-3 oz for the first 2-3 months while a friends baby was taking 3 x as much but I don’t think she was over feeding, it was just how much he needed. The total amount they require per day is also related to weight. When mine was taking small feeds the HV recommended adding up the daily total but keep in mind there is also a range of normal for this so don’t worry if it differs from the recommended amount.

@climbershell don't know. I've got some more advice about this today and I will follow it more:... see if he's ok not being fed as much

Alloveragain3 · 15/12/2023 18:56

My little one was born at 6lbs and wasn't gaining weight at 2 weeks.

We had been told by her doctor to feed 150mls/kg/ day and were giving about 40mls every 2-3 hours.

Turns out she needed way more than this and is much happier taking anything from 60-120mls per feed. That's from 2 to 4 ounces.

I figure she needs more than average as she has a lot of growing to do!

That was right for us, baby is now 12 weeks and only just taking 4oz. They have tiny tummy's

Still on the same percentile for growth?

troppibambini6 · 15/12/2023 19:32

@orangeguy sounds like you're doing a great job. Some babies are hungrier than others. Ignore the tummy stretching nonsense.
All mine roughly followed the suggested feeding schedule until dc5 came along he was a total milk monster. He just loved milk. Dc6 was the complete opposite never had big milk feeds.
Just be guided by them. If they take too much they will soon throw it up!

I was told by my health visitor (many years ago) that a baby's stomach is roughly the size of their fist.
It sounds like your DD is getting enough as she is having a healthy punt of wet nappies and gaining weight.
