Baby hates pram

Looking for any advice!

4.5 month baby hates the pram! It’s the bassinet (yo-yo) style one - she can’t be in there for long before crying and even if I keep moving/use ‘rockit’ device, the crying just escalates. It’s always been this way although it was better was she was newborn as she would more easily drift off to sleep in there (as long as I kept moving!)

she is way better at the sling but I’d love to be able to use the pram occasionally.

i see loads of other parents around pushing a pram with serene babies and wonder where I’m going wrong!

any advice please?

I know a few people who changed the bassinet for the seat at around that age because their babies were getting very cross with the bassinet.

VivaVivaa · 12/12/2023 17:54

Switch to the seat on an incline. DS1 hated the bassinet from birth and DS2 started protesting it at 3ish months. Both have been infinitely happier in the seat on an incline. I can’t imagine any 4 or 5 month old being happy not being able to see out and interact to be honest

Mine hated the bassinet from 4 months. Far too nosy to go in it. I started using the stroller attachment and he was much happier being able to see everything and have a good nose.

Everyone I know swapped to the seat at 4-5 months, myself included, either because baby was getting grumpy or they outgrew the bassinet/newborn pack.

Some babies just hate the pram no matter what you do, I’m unlucky enough to have one of those babies! I distinctly remember getting her in the pram and 3-4 feet to the edge of my driveway and turning back again because I couldn’t deal with the crying.

I put my little girl in the stroller part facing me at 12 weeks on as much of an incline as possible which helped considerably, we even managed a few naps in it which was unheard of. Then by 20 weeks or so she decided she hated that as well and even at a year old in an outward facing stroller I have to bribe her with snacks and make sure I don’t go too far. Predominantly, I had to, and continue to have to use a sling

brownbutterfrangipanetart · 12/12/2023 18:51

Thanks all - I suspected it may be because she’s more alert and inquisitive now so finds it boring in the bassinet. I just thought she had to be 6 months before changing to seated one.

@Zaphiera ive been there before - where I’ve left house, crying commenced and immediately went home again!

My little one has been in parent facing stroller on incline since he was 3 months. He's always been too nosy😆

I had no car so for 4 months my daughter screamed through every trip in the pram and 99% of the time ended in the sling. Once at 4 months she fell asleep once on the way to a class. At 5 months she did it a second time and after that she would go to sleep in the pram but if awake she screamed. By 5.5 months she only did her afternoon nap in the pram and a had to do a 2-3h walk in the pram every day regardless of the weather....so be careful what you wish for!

PurBal · 12/12/2023 20:36

Sit her up.

I had one baby who hated the bassinet because he couldn't see things. He was much happier in the sling until we changed to the seat unit then he was fine in the pram. Second baby (same pram) had no issue with the bassinet and was content just looking at whoever was pushing him

24HoursFromTulseHill · 12/12/2023 20:53

DS hated his bassinet from about 4 months onwards. He hated lying on his back, hearing things but not being able to see the world.
I swapped to a carrier and he was much happier, then moved onto the buggy when he was 6 months old and kept the carrier for short trips. He liked going front-facing for maximum entertainment.
He'd nap in a carrier but has never napped in his bassinet or buggy since the newborn days - he's too busy watching what's going on.
I waited until 6 months, as advised, because I was worried about his spine development but I do remember counting down the days until I could have him sat up in the buggy because I knew he'd be happier in that position.

brownbutterfrangipanetart · 12/12/2023 21:03

sounds like it’s fairly common at this age as they get more curious.

@24HoursFromTulseHill yes I’ve read the 6 months thing too so also counting the days and the sling will be getting a lot of use in the meantime!

You can buy a special insert that makes them a lot more supported in the sitting up bit, especially for the yoyo where the sitting up option is quite simple/not supportive... it's like an extra cushion with neck support

brownbutterfrangipanetart · 13/12/2023 09:10

Thanks @Alwaystired2023 will investigate that!

My DS hated the bassinet from about this age. I wasn't comfortable putting him in the pushchair attachment until he was a bit sturdier, so I just used the sling a lot until he was 6 months.

It's only a few more weeks, it will fly by! DS loves sitting up in the pushchair now.

maltichi · 13/12/2023 15:09

I think most parents stop using the bassinet at this age. Mine were all too big to use it by 4 months anyway.

Old thread, but just in case anyone is reading and it's helpful: look up the US instructions for your buggy, most of them say to use the buggy seat from 3 months.

My eldest hated the pram, she had silent reflux and was in pain lying down. She wasn't much more than 3 months when we moved her to the seat and she was absolutely fine - and much happier. Complete game changer.

brownbutterfrangipanetart · 30/03/2024 11:10

Yep old thread - I ended up using the upright pram just before 6 month mark and I now use it several times a day every day with success! It’s been an absolute game changer
