Stomach bugs - can’t keep water down?

My almost 4 year old came home early from nursery today with his first ever stomach bug. So much fun with a 1 week old at home too!

I feel awful for him, he’s never looked so ill before, eyes are huge and glazed. He can’t even keep water down at the moment, is that normal? We’ve got plain pasta, noodles, crackers, banana etc but he’s not interested.

He’s throwing up every 15-30 mins but tiny amounts of frothy liquid or just yellowish bile from not eating, as he didn’t eat his lunch at nursery either.

Will he take an ice lolly?
Has he kept Calpol down?

Itsbeginningtolookalotlike · 12/12/2023 17:33

@DustyLee123 is spot on.. Ice lollies are great at preventing dehydration. Often they just drink the water too fast for poorly tummies to cope with.

As in a sugary ice lolly? I can defo try, but I’d read to avoid sugars

He needs salts and sugars to replace what he's losing. Sipping flat pop can help too. Or as suggested ice lollies or ice cubes.

Yes those sugary ice pops from the freezer are really good for stomach upsets and kids.

Otherwise very small sips of water every 15 mins, like a teaspoonful.

JustMaggie · 12/12/2023 18:34

Ice chips are good too. (Not a whole ice cube, he may choke)

Pammela2 · 12/12/2023 18:37

I wouldn’t be forcing him to drink or eat anything just now. Try and get him to lie still and listen to an audio book to fall asleep for a while.
Then I usually see if an ice lolly will work but I don’t force any liquids etc for the first few hours of a tummy bug because it just adds to the misery.
I hope you’re over it soon!

When we ended up in hospital with my son who was really poorly with stomach bug we were told to do a 50:50 mix of apple juice & water. Syringed 5ml every 10mins or so. For some reason that seems to stay down better than water and gives them some sugar.
Hope he’s better soon.

Thanks all. Ice lollies went down a treat.

Puking stopped last night but today we have a temp. Is this typical of norovirus?

Well I came down with the damn thing too. Can confirm ice lollies are a winner, they definitely helped me!

Little one isn’t 100% but doing much better.

thank you

Dioralyte is a huge help for replacing salts, etc, lost through sickness. Can buy at Tescos or a pharmacy.

We’ve got this at the moment OP. Exactly the same pattern. Day or 2 of mostly vomiting with a bit of diarrhoea. Then a couple of days of fatigue and temps and refusal of all food. DS is day 5 today and finally ate a normal lunch. I’m day 2 and I feel atrocious. Interestingly the baby is snotty and looks awful but hasn’t been sick.

I’ve had Noro once before and I’m pretty certain this isn’t it. When I had Noro it was explosive diarrhoea predominant ++ that lasted for a good few days. But who knows!

Whyisthishappening87 · 16/12/2023 16:13

@VivaVivaa Urgh. It’s absolutely vile whatever it is. Our 12 day old has been off today, projectile vomited once and hasn’t been interested in bf this PM - I’ve just managed to get a bottle of expressed milk down him and so far he’s kept it down.

Hats off you you OP, dealing with a 12 day old baby as well. Hope you all feel better soon in time for a lovely Christmas 🌷
