Know the feeling - came back today with 24 creme eggs. Bloody Asda offers!

brimfull · 14/03/2008 19:24

mmmm that's much better than 24 fruit shoots, although I'm not tempted byt fruit shoots and creme eggs would be too much for me

OK, please someone tell me what the deal is with Fruit Shoots! My dd is only 9 weeks so this isn't an issue for me yet but my niece (5) has them every so often, such as when we're on holiday she'll have the odd one - she mostly only likes water.

Anyway, aren't they just like Robinsons R or something, a no added sugar squash? I accept it's better for kids to drink water/milk/juice but why are these things hated so much? I've wanted to ask for months!

They are common. As are Gregg's sausage rolls.

sherby · 14/03/2008 23:04

Aspartame

Google it its some nasty arse stuff. Much better for them to occasionally have some squash with real sugar in than sweetners

Plus it tastes gross

nannyL · 15/03/2008 10:17

you are much better off giving you child squash (or anything else for that matter) with sugar in (which is natural and grows on plants, and humans / mammals have been consuming for thousands of years with no side effects)

Rather than discusting chemicals that they use to make things taste sweet (these chemicals have the same molecular shape as sugar and stimulate the sweet taste buds on the tounge in the same)

Some of these chemicals are not necessarily safe (ie banned in USA cause in USA they believe they cause cancer, but ok here apparently according to our government) so WHY give them to tiny children?

If you read the ingrediants label of a fruit shoot you will undertstand why not to give them to children (or yorself) often (or ever IMO)

above post direct to eyeballs in the sky btw

The purple fruit shoots (and Vimto) make ds1 crazy. Darting eyes, daffy duck hooting crazy.

chibi · 15/03/2008 10:23

nannyl EVERYTHING is chemicals sweetie, even you.

sarz · 15/03/2008 10:30

Even as an adult food colouring and sweetners send me crazy! When i was at uni and couldnt afford a night out, i would just buy a bag of skittles and go out with everyone, and people would think i was realy drunk!!

brimfull · 15/03/2008 10:33

I think it's just the lurid plastic bottles that ds is attracted to.
Perhaps I shall empty them all secretly and fill with wholesome fruit juice or even innocent smoothies?
Nah..cant' be arsed.

chibi... thanks for that .... having done A level chemistry im completely aware of that, but is it not blatently obviouse that manufactured chemical crap is nothing like consuming naturaly grown organic matter, grown as nature intended?

rather than random chemicals that have done 'chemistry' to make them resemble natural stuff?

lilmamma · 15/03/2008 11:30

innocent smooties are vile, they have a horrible after taste..

squigglywig · 15/03/2008 11:34

nature doesn't intend anything...

and the chemistry that goes on in nature is pretty extensive and produces it's fair share of nasties - free radicals anyone?

chibi · 15/03/2008 12:14

rofl squigglywig.

Oops. Didn't mean to be rude. Is one of my pet rants. Sorry.
