Co-sleeping and baby crawling

Hi just looking for some advice. My daughter has co-slept with us since she was a few months old and this hasn’t been an issue up until recently. She has just learnt how to get into a sitting position by herself and is starting to crawl. It’s happened 3 times now where she’s sat up in the bed and im worried now she’s moving she will crawl and fall out. We have bed rails either side of the bed but these don’t cover the whole length or foot of the bed. Just wondering what other people have done when babies reach this age. The rails also aren’t very high so when she starts to pull herself up I’m worried she might fall over them. Do I need to stop co-sleeping or is there maybe some solution? Thanks

My DD used to fall out of bed regularly. Sometimes she didn't even wake up. We'd find her asleep on the floor when we went up to bed, or sometimes in the morning.

Pillows where the bed rails end, provides enough of a barrier that you'll wake up before she crawls far.

I think I was too much of a light sleeper for it to be an issue as I can remember making additional changes to the bed. If you think it's too much of a risk you could move your mattress to the floor or start the process of getting them into their own cot.

Put pillows on the floor. It's just a phase. Every new skill they learn, they seem the practice it during their sleep!

We went through a week of her clapping her hands in her sleep a few weeks ago 😂

Bed rails are an entrapment risk.

its much safer that she falls on the floor.

close the door, baby-safe the room and put some pillows down.

You can put pillows on the floor, but honestly with my two this wasn't much of an issue. I found they'd sooner come crawl up onto me when they awoke than try leaving the bed. If they are old enough teach safe ways to get down (they picked up 'turn around' quite quickly so would exit the bed quite safely backwards when they did go.

If you are worried they'll increase their fall by going over the barrier, remove the barrier and put a pool noodle under the mattress instead.

Sorry- pool noodle under the SHEET!

Yo shouldn’t have rails at the sides - if baby tries to climb over them they're more likely to be injured. They could also get trapped in them. Make sure your wardrobe, if it’s free standing, is securely attached to the wall. Better still, pop the mattress on the floor or pop her in her cot at the foot of the bed.
