Are school teachers allowed to come to your house

I had a big problem with a safeguarding teacher when my kids were off sick for 3 days I had to leave my kids with there grandparents which is my mother as I had work. A teacher turned up at my home unannounced asking where my kids were and that she was asking neighbours for a key also if I leave my kids on there own. She said to me I don't think your kids are safe and think your inside hurting your kids I had to leave work and prove my kids were safe with my mother which was so disgusting made me feel sick. The neighbours said she asked personal questions I broke down in tears is this allowed Any advice appreciated.

There must be more to this story. There is no way a teacher would show up like this unless there was a significant history or claims made. If you're concerned about whether this behaviour is allowed you need to report it to the head of school. This all sounds a bit odd. Is there something you're not telling us?

adventadvent · 09/12/2023 15:31

This didn't happen

ToSendOrNot · 09/12/2023 15:31

The teacher can turn up, yes. Especially if they take a lot of time off. The questioning seems extreme though, and it sounds like the teacher was very concerned. There must be more to this story, even if you do not realise it yet. Either someone has reported you or the children have said something at school or both.

If your kids don't turn up for school for a few days and the school are not able to get in touch with you they may send someone round to find out how you are and if they can help.

Did you contact the school to let them know that the kids would not be in?

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 09/12/2023 15:34

They can turn up for safeguarding checks, yes.

ElevenSeven · 09/12/2023 15:35

Yes, they can visit the home for safeguarding checks, as PP have said.

More to this, if it happened.

spanieleyes · 09/12/2023 15:37

Yes, absolutely. I do it quite often! However, I don't ask personal questions other than to ensure that the children are safe .

Jinglingallthewaytochristmas · 09/12/2023 15:37

Yes they can. Normally it would be an educational welfare officer.

So your children were at home and the teacher was standing at the door knocking but your Mum didn’t answer the door. I can see why she was concerned. If she had seen the kids throw the window and no one answered the door then she should have/would have called the police.

School has a duty of care towards your children to ensure they’re safe. Did you ring to explain your children were sick? It’s unusually for them all to be ill at exactly the same time.

spanieleyes · 09/12/2023 15:39

Oh, and if I don't get a reply or am not satisfied that the children are safe and well, I request a police safe and well check. Certainly after 3 days absence if we have had no parental contact or there are concerns that the children MIGHT be left alone at home ( I am primary) then the checks would be carried out.

FizzyLaser · 09/12/2023 15:40

I’ve done it several times
imagine if a child had died. No teacher bothered to find out if they were still alive when they didn’t turn up to school for a few weeks.

Megifer · 09/12/2023 15:42

I wouldn't think a home visit after 3 days sickness is reasonable unless there have been other concerns.

Don't see why you left work? Surely you could have given the teacher the grans tel number or address? (Mind you tbf I wouldn't give out my mums address for a teacher to call round)

PaperDoIIs · 09/12/2023 15:46

Did you ring the school to let them know they would be off and why?

Why didn't your mum answer the door when she knocked?

Have you ever left your children home alone before?

Have the school raised concerns with you previously?

1smallhamsterfoot · 09/12/2023 15:51

Something doesn’t add up here.

LakeTiticaca · 09/12/2023 15:52

Surely there is more to it. What are you not telling us OP?

QuietBear · 09/12/2023 16:01

Either your children have very poor attendance generally or there are safeguarding concerns around your family.

Did you contact the school to let them they were unwell?

AnotherDanceClass · 09/12/2023 16:09

We’ve had someone turn up from the 4th day of absence a couple of times. Kids had been seen by a medical professional and/or evidence had been given to the school so I told them to go away. Kids were in bed ill. They tried to insist on being allowed to look at our kids in bed asleep but I refused. No history of poor attendance. They were quite arsy but didn’t make any accusations. I’d have called the police myself if they did.

FizzyLaser · 09/12/2023 16:10

@AnotherDanceClass why didn’t you just run up school and say what was wrong with them?

AnotherDanceClass · 09/12/2023 16:11

I always call the school to explain absence. I had both time’s they turned up.

FloweryName · 09/12/2023 16:12

Of course they’re allowed to check that children are safe if they have valid reason to be worried.

Dinoboymama · 09/12/2023 16:12

They can come and chap your door yes. They don't have a right to enter your home without being invited in.

If there are immediate concerns that children are being harmed/neglected they have to call social services and/or the police for them to assess.

And today in "Things That Never Happened"....

HeyDiggity · 09/12/2023 16:13

They can and should visit after 3 days if they couldn’t make contact. Did you not ring and explain on day 1? You could have been dead inside with the children locked in with you.

Maybe with a cat lightly snacking on your body

Unabletomitigate · 09/12/2023 16:14

Where are you based? It seems odd for a teacher to come to someones house, and even odder to interogate neighbours and ask for a key.

My grandchildren's schools have always had my number for emergencies. I think it could be quite suspicious refusing to tell the school who was looking after the children.
